"Right On Track" - The Breakfast Club
from the album Breakfast Club (1987)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #7 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 11

Today's SOTD comes from the dance/pop band The Breakfast Club, who started out in the late 70s in New York. With a fluid line-up that once sported the one and only Madonna, the group solidified under lead singer Dan Gilroy and drummer/producer Stephen Bray (both former boyfriends of the Material Girl), who also helped Madge with some of her early big hits, like "Angel" and "Into The Groove". They released their self-titled debut album in 1987, and the first single, "Right On Track", ably rode the dance-pop train to land their biggest hit...

"Right On Track" became the Breakfast Club's sole top-40 pop hit, reaching #7 in May of 1987. The record also peaked at #2 on Billboard's Dance Club Play chart, and even crossed over to their R&B list at #64. The single was a minor hit in England, landing at #54.  A follow-up single, the more subdued "Kiss And Tell", managed to club to the halfway mark on the Hot 100. They made a play back for the clubs with "Never Be The Same", reaching #8 on the dance chart. A fourth single from the album, a cover of the soul classic "Expressway To Your Heart", nicked the club chart at #30. They were nominated for a Grammy for Best New Artist, but they wouldn't release another album. Bray would continue to work with Madonna and other dance artist, and was nominated for a Tony Award for writing the musical version of The Color Purple.
