Journey - "Only The Young"
from the album Vision Quest (Original Soundtrack) (1985)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #9 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 11
Today's Song of the Day is by the Bay Area arena rock band Journey, who had scored four top-40 hits with their Frontiers album with the top-tenner "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)" along with the power ballad "Faithfully", and the mid-tempo "After The Fall" and "Send Her My Love". In the break between album, one of the songs that didn't make the cut for the album, "Only The Young", managed to find a home on the soundtrack to the Matthew Modine movie Vision Quest. Released as a single, the song written by the core of the group (singer Steve Perry, keyboard man Jonathan Cain, and guitarist Neal Schon) became another big hit for the group...
"Only The Young" became Journey's fifth top-ten pop hit in March of 1985, while topping out at #3 on the rock radio chart in Billboard. The single also made it to #8 in France and almost hit the top-ten at #11 in Canada.
Shortly after the success of the single both Ross Valory and Steve Smith were canned from the band, and Randy Jackson (of future American Idol fame) was brought it for the next album Raised On Radio.
