Pop Sweep: January 18, 2014...

Hey gang, it's time to kick off the first of today's "chart sweeps", sampling the songs reaching the various singles charts in Billboard magazine. As always, I'll start out with the pop format lists, then later in the day move on to rock, R&B, country, and dance..

On the "big" chart, Billboard's Hot 100, which combines data from sales, airplay, and internet streaming, Pitbull & Ke$ha claim the throne with "Timber". It's Mr. Worldwide's second #1 hit here (after "Give Me Everything"), while this is the rehabbed pop singer's third and first as a featured artist...

In another slow post-holiday week, the top debut doesn't come until #81. "Love Don't Die" is the first single from the pop/rock band The Fray's upcoming fourth album Helios, and it's already made the top-10 on the Adult-Top-40 and Triple-A Rock formats. They have made the top ten here three times, with "How To Save A Life" reaching #3 in 2006..

Country singer Jerrod Niemann returns at #90 with "Drink To That All Night". In 2010 he took his breakthrough single "Lover, Lover" to #29 on this chart...

The fifth single from Bruno Mars' Grammy-nominated Unorthodox Jukebox, "Young Girls", slips in at #94. The first two, "Locked Out Of Heaven" and "When I Was Your Man", topped the Hot 100..

Newcomers Dan + Shay debut at #96 with their first country hit, "19 You + Me"...

The last entry at #98 is a worldwide smash from the movie Despicable Me 2. Pharrell Williams' "Happy" has already topped the charts in Australia, France, and the UK. It's my "Pop Pick of the Week"..

..and now on to the pop radio charts...

On the Mainstream Top-40 radio panel, Eminem and Rihanna rule for a fifth week with "The Monster"....

The sole entry at #37 is Miley Cyrus' third single from her Bangerz set, "Adore You"...

Meanwhile, on the older-skewing Adult Top-40 format, "Counting Stars" from OneRepublic enjoys a fourth week on top, while there are no debuts.

Lastly, on the Adult Contemporary (or "Easy Listening") chart, Katy Perry hangs tight at #1 for a seventh non-consecutive week with "Roar"...

With all the Christmas music gone from the format, there's a bunch of songs crossing over to this chart. First up at #22 is A Great Big World and Christina Aguilera with their top-5 Hot 100 hit, "Say Something"...

Lite-pop singer/songwriter Colbie Caillat returns at #24 with "Hold On", the first single from her upcoming fourth album. Each of her other three has produced a #1 hit on this chart...

Daughtry is in at #27 with "Waiting For Superman". The band led by American Idol finalist Chris topped the list in 2007 with "Home"...

Finally at #29 is another rock crossover, "Still Into You" from Paramore. They went a notch higher with "The Only Exception" in 2011...

That's it for the start of today's musical journey..I'll return in 90 minutes with the latest on rock radio...

There's some serious hatred out there for "Happy" and I don't get it. Thanks for showing it some love.
