Robbed Hit of the Week 4/15/13 - Donna Summer's "Unconditional Love"...
Donna Summer featuring Musical Youth - "Unconditional Love"
from the album She Works Hard For The Money (1983)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #43
This week's "Robbed Hit" is by the recently departed Queen of Disco, Donna Summer, who had turn a contract-satisfying set into a huge success as "She Works Hard For The Money", the title track from her 1983 album for Mercury Records, became one of her most long-revered hits. For the followup, she eschewed the dance floor for more island rhythms with the carnivalish "Unconditional Love", written by Donna with producer Michael Omartian. To accompany her, she enlisted teen reggae sensation Musical Youth, whose "Pass The Dutchie" had scored them a top-10 hit and a Grammy nomination....
Since new-wave sheen had taken over pop radio by now (with the title track did so well), "Unconditional Love" stalled out right under the top-40 on the pop chart, even though it was a big hit on R&B radio, reaching #9 there. In Britain, it was even a bigger hit than "She Works Hard...", topping out at #14 on the singles charts in that country.
...and here they are in concert with the song..
