Rock Sweep: February 23, 2013...

It's time for part two of this week's five-part "chart sweeps" of the newest songs making it on to the music charts in Billboard magazine, and this time I've got the latest rock songs on the radio...

On the aggregate Rock Airplay chart (which apparently the mag still hasn't figured out how to fix yet), Madness rules for a tenth non-consecutive week with "Madness"...

The top debut on this list is also the biggest Pop entry, Fall Out Boy's "My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark" at #44.

Coming in at #45 is newcomers Otherwise with "I Don't Apologize (1000 Pictures)". The band, who hail from Las Vegas (like the Killers and Imagine Dragons), are already in the top-20 on the mainstream rock chart...

The Mowgli's enter at #46 with "San Francisco". The song has already spent a month on the Modern Rock chart...

Grunge veterans Soundgarden follow up their top-5 hit "Been Away Too Long" with "By Crooked Steps" at #48...

Rap/rock hybrid band Hollywood Undead come in at #49 with "We Are", their song that's already spent a dozen weeks on the mainstream list...(NSFW)

The last debut on the big rock chart at #50 is by Ohio "indietronica" duo Twentyonepilots with "Holding On To You", which has spent seven weeks in the modern rock chart (it's at #26 now)...

Meanwhile, over on the Modern Rock/Alternative chart, Madness finally conquer the record for most weeks at #1 since the chart began as "Madness" reigns for a 19th week, as the aforementioned "My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark" by Fall Out Boy is the highest debut at #29.

Coming in at #31 is British critics' darlings alt-J, with "Breezeblocks", with already my pick for the music video of the year....

Making its appearance at #35 is New Zealander rocker Willy Moon, with a track that's been heard for months hawking the new iPods, "Yeah Yeah"...

My favorite band of ALL TIME, Depeche Mode, return at #38 with their first new song in four years, "Heaven". Since this chart's inception in 1989, they have topped the list three times, with "Enjoy The Silence", "Policy Of Truth", and "I Feel You"...

"From Can to Can't", from the Sound City documentary all-star lineup of Corey Taylor (Slipknot), Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters), Rick Nielsen (Cheap Trick), and Scott Reeder (Kyuss), enters this format chart at #39. Grohl's Foo Fighters are the group that Muse just beat out for longest stay at #1 with..

The last entry at #40 is Danish rock group New Politics with their second hit "Harlem". It follows "Yeah Yeah Yeah" which made #16 last year...

Over on the Mainstream Rock chart, All That Remains remain on top for a second week with "Stand Up", as the aforementioned "By Crooked Steps" by Soundgarden is the top debut at #29...

Shinedown arrive at #38 with the fourth single from their Amaryllis album, "I'll Follow You". The hard-rock act has shined in this format, with every one of their previous entries reaching the top-5, and nine of them (including their last five) going all the way to #1.

Massachusetts metalcore act Killswitch Engage are the other new song at #39 with "In Due Time", their sixth to make the list. Their cover of Dio's "Holy Diver" went to #12 here in 2007...

At the Triple-A (adult album alternative, or "hipster rock") radio, The Lumineers hold on to the top spot for a seventh non-consecutive week with "Stubborn Love"...

The sole debut is by last season's American Idol Phillip Phillips, who follows his #1 AAA hit "Home" at #27 with "Gone, Gone, Gone"...

On the harder-edge Active Rock format, All That Remains stay at #1 for a second week with "Stand Up", while the aforementioned songs by Soundgarden, Killswitch Engage, and Shinedown enter the chart at #27, #35, and #6 respectively...

The other single that joins them at #39 is Atlanta-based alt-metal "super"group Eye Empire, with "More Than Fate"...

On the last format, "Heritage Rock", Alice In Chains move to #1 with "Hollow", and there are no new entries...

That's it for the rock side, I'll be back in an hour and a half with the latest on R&B radio. Rock On!
