Songoftheday 12/18/12 - Don't put your head on my shoulder, sink me in a river of tears...
Culture Club - "Time (Clock Of The Heart)"
from the album Kissing To Be Clever (1982)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #2 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 13
Today's Song of the Day was the second big single for British pop group Culture Club, led by the soulful-voiced and feminine-dressed Boy George. After breaking through to American audiences with their unabashed and ragga-tinged "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?", they released the R&B/pop confection "Time (Clock Of The Heart)", which at the time I preferred way over the former hit for its direct pop edge and smooth delivery. Time (no pun intended) would equate them more in my mind. Like most of their debut album, the lyrics belie a conflict over sexuality that presented itself with George and drummer Jon Moss' secret relationship, although this particular song didn't make the original British release...
"Time" equaled the chart success of their debut in the States, and was top-10 all over the world. The best thing about Boy George is that his vocals are completely unrestrained, so the line between masculine and feminine don't matter at all.

American singer Leah Dizon recorded "Time" in Japan in 2007...
...and truer to Boy George's heart (or wardrobe), drag performer Sheena Rose did a cover of the song in 2011...
Up tomorrow: a classic arena rock ballad written for the Song of the Day artist of 8/10/12.
