Grammy Sweep 2013: The Big Kahunas...
And now I'm up to the final "Grammy Sweep" of the nominations for the next awards, and here's a rundown of the 'big' ones...
(Click below to see the rest of the post)
Album of the Year:
Black Keys - El Camino
fun. - Some Nights
Mumford & Sons - Babel
Frank Ocean - Channel Orange
Jack White - Blunderbuss
The Grammys went full-out "hipster" this year, with all five nominees from the 'alternative' genre (Ocean's is 'alt-soul'). For once I'd be happy if any of these five would win, but I am annoyed that the voters didn't feel any other genre would be worthy.
Who I feel should win: a toss up between Jack White's solo powerhouse and Frank Ocean's adventure.
Who probably will win: Most likely Mumford, but Ocean can steal this one if the rock vote is split.
Record of the Year (this is for the production and performance):
Black Keys - "Lonely Boy"
Kelly Clarkson - "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)"
fun. f/Jonelle Monae - "We Are Young"
Gotye f/Kimbra - "Somebody That I Used To Know"
Frank Ocean - "Thinkin' 'Bout You"
Taylor Swift - "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together"
This is the opposite of the albums noms. All too safe (save the Ocean song, and even that's expected), and who the fuck did Borchetta pay off to get Swift on here? That's the representative of country music? Jesus H Christ on a stick.
Who I think should win: "Thinking Bout You", but would be happy with Gotye.
Who probably will win - fun's "We Are Young".
Song of the Year: (for the composition itself)
Ed Sheeran - "The A Team"
Miguel - "Adorn"
Carly Rae Jepsen - "Call Me Maybe"
Kelly Clarkson - "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)" (see above)
fun f/Jonelle Monae - "We Are Young" (see above)
"Call Me Maybe" was a fun piece of fluff (no pun intended), but for Song of the Year? No. If aliens saw this as a full representative of the best in songwriting, they would crown Ed Sheeran king and the rest idiots.
Who i feel should win - Ed Sheeran for his sweet, melodic yet cutting piece of real life.
Who probably will win - either Kelly or Carly. blech.
Best New Artist:
Alabama Shakes
fun
Hunter Hayes
The Lumineers
Frank Ocean
fun is the front-runner here, even though they're the "ringer" since this is their second album.
Who I feel should win: Frank Ocean
Who probably will win: fun.
That's it for now...I'll be back tonight with this week's "robbed hit"...
