Songoftheday 1/5/15 - We cannot live together we cannot live apart, and that's the situation I've known it from the start...
"Throwing It All Away" - Genesis
from the album Invisible Touch (1986)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #4 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 12
Today's Song of the Day comes from the British rock band Genesis, whose transformation from progressive rock giants to a pop hitmaking machine was complete by their 1986 album Invisible Touch. The vapid title track from the set scored them their first #1 hit in America, at the cost of one of the worst singles of the rock era. Thankfully the follow-up, "Throwing It All Away", was a much more worthy addition to their legacy. Primarily written by guitarist Mike Rutherford (whose Mike + The Mechanics side-project proved to be successful and enjoyable), the song was a mid-tempo realistic look at an unraveling relationship in the eyes of someone not willing to give it all up...
"Throwing It All Away" became the second top-10 hit from the album in the U.S. in October of 1986. The single also topped both the Mainstream Rock and Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") radio charts in Billboard magazine. Internationally, the record went top-20 in Canada and to #22 in their native Britain, where it was the final single released from the set.
