Songoftheday 1/19/15 - Now I bring you home you tell me goodnight's not enough for you...

"I Didn't Mean To Turn You On" - Robert Palmer
from the album Riptide (1985)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #2 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 13

Today's Song of the Day comes from the late British singer Robert Palmer, who had a winning 1986 so far with "Addicted To Love" topping the American pop charts and "Hyperactive" a worthy top-40 follow-up in the States. For the fourth single from the album (lead single "Discipline Of Love" flopped out in the bottom of the charts) Palmer released a cover of a R&B hit by Cherrelle, "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On". Originally released in 1984, her version reached the top-ten on the R&B and dance charts, but only climbed to #79 on the Hot 100...

Palmer's version, produced by Chic bassist and Power Station bandmate Bernard Edwards, brought his instrument to the forefront and toughened the vocal performance, and most importantly brought back the vapid irrhythmic dancer/band from the "Addicted To love" clip...

Palmer's version of "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On" climbed all the way to the runner up spot on the American pop chart in November of 1986. The record also climbed to #3 on the Mainstream Rock chart. Internationally, the record was a top-10 hit in Ireland and his native England, and top-40 in Australia and Canada.
