Pat Benatar - "We Belong"
from the album Tropico (1984)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #5 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 14

Today's song of the day is by rock singer Pat Benatar, who had a break through most of 1984 after her top-5 hit "Love Is A Battlefield" off of her mostly-concert Live From Earth album. She returned at the end of that year with a single that pointed into a more pop oriented direction with the sitar-inflected kumbayah-ness of "We Belong". The song was written by the team of Eric Lowen and Dan Navarro (the latter is Dave's cousin) and produced by Peter Coleman with Pat's husband and guitarist Neil Giraldo...

"We Belong" edged out "Love Is A Battlefield" to become Pat's biggest pop hit in January of 1985 (they both spent 14 weeks in the top-40 and seven in the top-10, with "We" spending an extra week at #5). It also went to #3 on the rock radio format, and was her first adult-contemporary hit at #34. Internationally the single went top-ten in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and was her first top-40 hit in England, reaching #22...

All and all it was a great vehicle to demonstrate Pat's versatility as a singer, allowing her to emote without screeching.

The writers also recorded a version of their own which appeared on the soundtrack to the soap Sunset Beach...

The pair also appeared on Lynn Carey Saylor's cover of the song with Queen's Brian May. Lowen had by that time been diagnosed with Lou Gehring's disease, which he would succumb to in 2012. He's the one singing with Lynn here...

Italian eurodance act Double Dare pumped the beat to "We Belong" in 1996...

The Bangles covered the song for a Lowen/Navarro tribute album in 2009..

indie-rock duo Everly, which included Bethany Joy Lenz from One Tree Hill, also recorded a version heard in her show..

More recently, the song was included in the stage adaptation of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert...

Finally, here's Pat live in 2001...
