Pop Sweep: November 30, 2013...

Hey gang, it's time to kick off today's five-part "chart sweeps" checking out the songs reaching the various singles charts in Billboard magazine, and as usual I'll start with the "big" chart and the pop side of things...

On Billboard's Hot 100, which tallies airplay, internet streaming, and sales, Lorde rules for an eighth week at #1 with "Royals"...

(and as a sidenote, yes, in one of their "stunts", they placed Bon Jovi's "Living On A Prayer" as a "re-entry" at #25 based on a "viral video" of a guy dancing at a basketball game that's only two minutes long. Really. Is this what we're coming to? I'm still waiting for advertisement songs to show up)

The top "real" debut of the week at #40 belongs to THIS IS THE VOICE contestant Matthew Schuler with, yes, another cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah". It's a perfect example of why I stopped watching the show I thought had promise here. There really should be a moratorium on this song on these shows.

Anyway, this is the fourth time the song has reached the Hot 100: in 2010 Justin Timberlake, Matt Morris, and Charlie Sexton took a charity version to #13...

Justin Bieber's sixth "Music Mondays" single, "All Bad" arrives at #50...

Indie rock group American Authors debut at #93 with their first hit single, "The Best Day Of My Life".

The final entry on the big chart at #99 is country single Jon Pardi with his top-20 country hit "Up All Night"...

and now onwards to the pop radio format charts...

On the Mainstream Top-40 radio panel, Miley Cyrus jumps to the top spot with "Wrecking Ball"...

Coming in at #37 is Britney Spears with "Perfume"....

Danish modern rock outfit New Politics lands at #38 with their former top-10 rock hit "Harlem"...

Scottish DJ and producer Calvin Harris teams up with Jordanian singer Ayah Marar at #39 with "Thinking About You", which is the top dance airplay hit this week...

The final entry at #40 is the top rock hit of the week, "Pompeii" by British modern rock group Bastille...

Meanwhile, on the older-skewing Adult Top 40 format, Swedish DJ Avicii conquers another format with his crossover dance/folk hit "Wake Me Up"...

Gavin DeGraw has the high debut here at #35 with "Make A Move". It follows "Best I Ever Had", which went to #14 a few weeks back...

Jason Derulo walks in at #36 with "Marry Me". It's the follow-up to "The Other Side", which peaked at #22 earlier this year..

The final entry at #40 is Justin Timberlake with "TKO". It's the second single from part 2 of his 20/20 Experience album; "Take Back The Night" went to #21 this summer...

Lastly, on the Adult Contemporary (or "easy-listening") chart, Katy Perry holds tight at #1 for a fourth week with "Roar"...

Well, Christmas is upon this format, as stations convert to the holiday programming. As such four of the five debuts are seasonal. Arriving at #21 is Kelly Clarkson with "Underneath The Tree". And yes, it's early, but it's my "Pop Pick of the Week"...

Johnny Mathis and Jim Brickman sleigh in at #27 with "Sending You A Little Christmas"...

Upstate New Yorker Whitney Wolanin flies in at #28 with "Run Run Rudolph"...

Mary J. Blige welcomes the season at #29 with "This Christmas"...

The final entry and only non-Christmas song at #30 is Katy Perry with "Unconditionally"...

Well that covers the first part of today's musical journey. I'll return in 90 minutes with the latest on rock radio...
