Songoftheday 6/8/13 - Everybody's talking and no one says a word, everybody's making love and no one really cares...

John Lennon - "Nobody Told Me"
from the album Milk and Honey (1984)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #5 (one week)
Weeks in the top-40: 11

Today's Song of the Day is by the musical legend John Lennon, whose life was tragically cut short in 1980 when he was murdered by a crazed man outside his New York apartment. At the time he had just released his "comeback" album Double Fantasy with wife Yoko Ono, and the first single from that album, "(Just Like) Starting Over", was beginning to climb the pop chart in the US, to eventually reach #1 posthumously at the end of December. Two more two-ten hits came from the set, "Woman" and "Watching The Wheels".

During the time he was shot Lennon and Ono were recording music for the followup to that record, and after three years, Yoko readied the final version of the record, as with Double Fantasy half John's and half hers. A song that John originally intended for former bandmate Ringo Starr, "Nobody Told Me", was finished up from the demo for the first single, and I can see John's writing style for Ringo's playful and less serious persona...

"Nobody Told Me" became Lennon's big final coda, reaching the top-10 in the US, Canada, England, and Australia in march of 1984.  In American he peaked right under the top-10 at #11 on the Adult-contemporary (easy-listening) chart, while going all the way to #2 on the rock radio format panel. He managed a couple more minor hits, with "I'm Steppin' Out" from the album reaching #55 the same year. However, in 1995 the Beatles revived another old track of John's "Free As A Bird", and went top ten.

Up tomorrow:  just some red-headed wrestling-loving unordinary woman. Who's also jovial.
