Dionne Warwick & Luther Vandross - "How Many Times Can We Say Goodbye"
from the albums How Many Times Can We Say Goodbye (Dionne, 1983) and Busy Body (Luther, 1983)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #27 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 5

Today's Song of the Day is by two of my all-time favorite African-American singers, pop diva Dionne Warwick and postdisco vocal master Luther Vandross. Dionne had started out 1983 on a good note, with the Bee Gees' penned/produced "Heartbreaker" bringing her back into the top-10 on the pop chart, while Vandross had been busy producing hits for Aretha Franklin while continuing his R&B career. Luther produced Dionne's next album, and the title track duet became another hit for her, and Luther's second top-40 hit. It was written by Steve Goldman....

"How Many Times...." was a moderate pop hit for the pair, while reaching the top-10 on both the R&B and Adult Contemporary (soft rock) chart. It also scraped the bottom of the British charts at #99. I still have a special place in my heart for the song; Luther and Dionne really brought it.
