Country Sweep: July 14, 2012...

Hey folks, it's time for part four of this week's "chart sweeps" of Billboard magazine's list of the top songs on the radio, in music stores, and online. This time out is a sampling of the songs hitting this week's country chart.

There's only one new song on this weeks list, and it belongs to Chris Cagle (pictured above), who had his comeback single after three years and leaving Capitol records with "Got My Country On" earlier this year. The followup to that song is at #56, and it's "Let There Be Cowgirls"...

After spending 20 weeks on the chart earlier this year, Texas-styled country group the Josh Abbott Band return to the chart even higher than when they peaked (#46) with "Touch" at #44...

...and since there's a dearth of new stuff, here's a look at some other acts on the chart that I haven't featured yet...

at #60 is North Carolinan Matt Stillwell with the rock-inflected "Ignition"...(hubba hubba)

Coming in at #49 is Darryl Worley, who had three #1 hits in the naughties with songs like "I Miss My Friend" and "Have You Forgotten?", with his latest, "You Still Got It"...

Aaron Lewis, lead singer of the hard rock band Staind, has another country solo hit at #47 with "Endless Summer"...

American Idol winner Scotty McCreery hangs on at #42 with "Water Tower Town"...

Newcomer Jon Pardi from California is right under the top-40 at #41 with "Missin' You Crazy"...

Two songs jump into the country top-40 this week: first is Texas-born Kristin Kelly with "Ex-Old Man"...

...and at #39 is Randy Houser, who's had three previous top-40 country singles, including the #2 "Boots On", now comes on with "How Country Feels"...

Justin Moore's third single from his sophomore album Outlaws Like Me (which includes the #1 hit "If Heaven Wasn't So Far Away") hangs on at #36, "Til My Last Day"...

Greg Bates has his first hit single at #35 with "Did It For The Girl"...

Like Justin Moore above, Jake Owen has the third single from his latest album, Barefoot Blue Jean Night, climbing at #34 with "The One That Got Away" (not the Katy Perry song)...

Phil Vassar is another powerhouse from the 00's on this week's list, as the two-time #1 artist comes in at #33 with the independently distributed "Don't Miss Your Life"...

Josh Thompson previews his upcoming sophomore set at #32 with "Comin' Around", which has been hanging around the lower half of the chart for 30 weeks now...

...and one notch above that at #31 is Kix Brooks, one half of the legendary country duo Brooks & Dunn, with "New To This Town" featuring rock guitarist Joe Walsh...

Jerrod Niemann's 2010 CD Judge Jerrod and the Hung Jury was one of my favorite country albums of the last couple of years, and he's back with a track from his next set, "Shinin' On Me" at #30...

and lastly, at #27 is the third single and title track from Chris Young's latest album, "Neon"...

Well that's it for this Texas-sized country sweep. Next up, the newest dance singles in the clubs, on the radio, and around the world. Twang on!

I'm rooting for Chris Cagle, but not feeling this single as much as the last. As for Mr Stillwell? Woof! Why is that song not a hit yet? Killer hook right there, and it isn't a redneck truck beer country girl song, either.

I'll second that on Stillwell, sadly it's been lingering on the lower half of the chart and about to drop out. It's so unlink the usual fare on Average Joe's record label. As for Cagle, I picked up the album on amazon (4.99) and yeah, "Let There Be Cowgirls" is a bit too cliche for me (though I guess so was GMCO but was happy to see him back). I like "Probably Just Time" from that set though a whole lot.
