Songoftheday 4/6/22 - And I know you've heard of me, 'cause I'm right there off of GT and Derbigny...
"Wobble Wobble" - 504 Boyz
from the album Goodfellas (2000)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #17 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 6
Today's song comes from the 504 Boyz, a hip-hop supergroup headed by rapper and No Limit Records label head Percy "Master P." and his brothers Vyshonn "Silkk The Shocker" and Corey "C-Murder". Master P's enterprise was hugely successful in the late 1990's, churning off multiple big-selling albums by a plethora of rappers, including himself, who last was in the crossover Hot 100 top-40 in the summer of 1998 with "Goodbye To My Homies". The following year, Silkk scored his own top-40 "pop" hit with "It Ain't My Fault 2". Rapper Michael "Mystikal" Tyler, who appeared on Master P's top-20 hit "Make 'Em Say Uhhh!" as well as on "It Ain't My Fault 2", was a part of the group, as well as Michael "Krazy" Wilson, Awood "Magic" Johnson, and McKinley "Mac" Phipps. The collective released their first albums under the 504 Boyz moniker, named for their New Orleans area code, Goodfellas, in 2000. The lead single from the record was a club party record "Wobble Wobble". Written by the group and produced by Carlos "Clos" Stephens. they take the emerging "bounce" culture in the city and make a dance track around it, one that still shows up at wedding receptions. There's not much to really go into on this, just a litany of admirations of bouncing butts is all...
"Wobble Wobble" became the 504 Boyz' first and only hit on Billboard magazine's Hot 100 "pop" chart, reaching the top 20 in May of 2000. The song topped their Rap Songs chart for six weeks, while spending a week at #2 on the R&B Singles list. The Goodfellas album, released in May as the single was cresting, spent a half year on the Billboard 200 sales tally, with a week at #2 at the start, while topping the R&B Albums list, going on to sell over a half million copies.
The Boyz weren't able to follow up that success, however, with follow-up "Whodi" completely stiffing. Their collected troubles grew when C-Murder and Mystikal were arrested for murder and rape respectively, with both eventually in prison. Master P replaced them with other rappers for the second 504 Boyz album Ballers, which was released in 2002 under the "New No Limit" label. The set peaked at #49 on the Billboard 200, and #13 on the R&B Albums list, while the sole charting single, "Tight Whips", stalled at #51 on the R&B singles chart. It would be the last major release from the group, though there was a Hurricane Katrina benefit that came out in 2005, and an EP Grab Da Wall and Rock Da Boat that popped up in 2021.
After "Wobble Wobble", Mystikal would go on to a solo career (before his incarceration) and will be back to the series.
