Songoftheday 4/30/22 - I guess you were lost when I met you still there were tears in your eyes, so out of trust and I knew no more than mysteries and lies...
"The One" - Backstreet Boys
from the album Millennium (1999)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #30 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40:4
Today's song comes from the Backstreet Boys, whose smash album Millennium had already spun off three pop hits with "I Want It That Way", "Larger Than Life", and "Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely". The fourth and final single from the millions-selling record was "The One". Written by Backstreet Boy Brian Littrell with producer Max Martin, the song has the boys acting all savior-like promising a brokenhearted girl that they will make everything right. A rote boy-band them that hits their target market where they want, and absolutely nothing more...
"The One" became the fourth top-40 pop hit from Millennium in July of 2000. The song rose to #15 on Billboard magazine's Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") chart, and #33 on the dance-oriented Rhythmic format list. Internationally, the single did a bit better, reaching the top ten in Hungary (#3), Canada (#4), Belgium (#4W/#35F), Romania (#4), Portugal (#6), the UK (#8), Spain (#9), and Italy (#10). It also made the top-40 in Iceland (#12), Germany (#15), New Zealand (#15), Switzerland (#19), Ireland (#19), Finland (#19), the Netherlands (#21), Sweden (#25), and Austria (#25). The Boys will return to the series.
