Songoftheday 2/9/22 - I'm a desperado underneath your window, I see your silhouette are you my Juliet?

"Shake Your Bon-Bon" - Ricky Martin
from the album Ricky Martin (1999)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #22 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 7

Today's song comes from Ricky Martin, who ushered in the "Latin Explosion" in the American pop music scene in 1999 with his #1 hit "Livin' La Vida Loca", as well as the follow-up "She's All I Ever Had" which peaked in the runner-up spot in the early autumn of that year. The third single was the fun dance track "Shake Your Bon-Bon". Written by song doctor Desmond Child along with producers George Noriega and Draco Rosa, the song rides a big Latin beat as Ricky implores you to just move your ass, nothing more and nothing less. He's totally into it, and his energy in this make it a bit more interesting than your usual dancefloor fodder. The music video, directed by Wayne Isham, even does it more favors, as this is definitely a concert-ready song...

"Shake Your Bon-Bon" became Ricky's third top-40 pop hit in America in February of 2000. The song also rose to #14 on Billboard magazine's Hot Latin Songs chart, and #25 on the Rhythmic radio format list. Internationally, the single made the top ten in Finland (#6), Canada (#9), and New Zealand (#10), while reaching the top 40 in Spain (#11), the UK (#12), Ireland (#22), and Australia (#27).

Along with "The Cup Of Life", which was an older single tacked on to the album, a fourth release from Ricky Martin, "Private Emotion", was a remake of an album track from the Philadelphia band The Hooters. Featuring Swedish singer Meja, the ballad went to #67 on Billboard's Hot 100, and #21 on their Adult Contemporary radio chart. Overseas, the song did much better, reaching the top ten in Finland (#6), Norway (#7), Sweden (#8), the UK (#9), and Switzerland (#9). Ricky will be back to the series.
