Songoftheday 2/23/22 - I said I wanna touch the earth, I wanna break it in my hands...
"Cowboy Take Me Away" - (Dixie) Chicks
from the album Fly (1999)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #27 (three weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 8
Today's song comes from the Chicks (then still the Dixie Chicks), who had scored their third top-40 crossover hit on Billboard magazine's Hot 100 chart in the fall of 1999 with "Ready To Run". That song appeared in the movie The Runaway Bride as well as served as the lead single for the trio's album Fly. Their follow-up became one of their most loved hits. "Cowboy Take Me Away", written by bandmember Martie Maguire with Marcus Hummon (who had a minor country radio hit in 1996 with "God's Country"), was a mid-tempo breezy love song about wanting to escape the hustle and bustle for those "wide open spaces" with her love. Their harmonies are impeccable, Martie's fiddle is transcendent, and the lyrics are dreamlike while painting a picture in your mind that really is so damn appealing, especially in these pandemic times decades later. Interestingly, the music video at first casts Natalie Maines, Emily Robison, and Maguire in the city, though by the end the cheesy 1999 special effects take over...
"Cowboy Take Me Away" climbed into the Hot 100 top-40 in January of 2000. The song was their fourth to top Billboard's Country Singles chart, where is stayed for three weeks. Internationally, the single topped the Canadian Country chart as well. The Chicks (and the album) will be back soon to the series.
