Songoftheday 12/2/15 - There comes a time when the boy must leave, and the man has to enter for the soul to understand...

"Rock Of Life" - Rick Springfield
from the album Rock Of Life (1988)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #22 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 6

Today's song of the day comes from Australian musician, singer, and actor Rick Springfield, who had dominated the first half of the 80's with fifteen top-40 pop hits in the U.S. However, the momentum from pure pop had certainly had a little toll on his results, with 1985's Tao album's two hits "Celebrate Youth" and "State Of The Heart" both peaking in the 20s. It also took a toll on Springfield himself, as he took three years to regroup for his Rock Of Life album in 1988. The title track, written by Rick like the rest of the album, was released as the first single, as like most older artists in the late 80s, he had to go "harder" in order to fit in with the pop radio landscape (since going "dance" wasn't an option)...

"Rock Of Life' became Rick's most recent pop top-40 hit in America in April of 1988, while sneaking on to Billboard's Mainstream Rock radio chart at #45. The single also reached the top-40 in Canada at #28.

Rick continued to record as well as act, being a forgotten DC Comics hero in the failed TV show Human Target. He returned to his soap opera roots in 2005 as Noah Drake in General Hospital. A year before, Rick also returned to the charts, climbing to #28 in 2004 on the Adult Contemporary radio chart with "Beautiful You". In 2005, he teamed up with another 80's singer, Richard Page from Mr. Mister, on a cover of the latter's "Broken Wings", which made if to #29 on the AC chart.
