The weekend is coming to a close, and it's time to check out the songs making their debut on the just-released official singles chart in Britain this week... There's a new #1 hit in the UK this week, and it's the fourth chart-topper for American pop/R&B singer Jason Derulo, who does the trick with "Want To Want Me". He previously led the list with " In My Head ", " Don't Wanna Go Home ", and " Talk Dirty " (making it one from each of his albums)... (Click below to see the rest of the post)

" Day-In Day-Out " - David Bowie from the album Never Let Me Down (1987) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #21 (two weeks) Weeks in the Top-40: 7 Today's SOTD comes from art-rock icon David Bowie , who lowered himself to cheese it up for charity with friend Mick Jagger on their 1985 cover of " Dancing In The Street " that made the American top-10. His next studio album, Never Let Me Down , came out in 1987, and the first single from the record, "Day-In Day-Out", like "Let's Dance", used the underbelly of civilized culture to backdrop his video... "Day-In Day-Out" peaked right under the top-20 on the American pop chart  in May of 1987. The single did better on rock radio, reaching #3 on Billboard 's Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, and #10 on their Dance Club Play list. Internationally, the song went top-10 in Belgium and Sweden, and top-20 in Canada, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and Bowie's native Britain. The single ...

It's time to kick off the first of today's five "chart sweeps", checking out the songs making the charts in Billboard magazine. On the "big" chart, Billboard 's Hot 100 , which combines tallies of sales, internet streaming, and radio airplay from all formats, Taylor Swift rockets from #53 to #1 to land her fourth #1 pop hit with " Bad Blood " featuring rapper Kendrick Lamar. Three of those #1s are from her current "pop" project 1989 . It's also Lamar's first #1 hit as well.. While Swift may have given up the "country" life, current genre A-lister Luke Bryan scores the highest new entry on the chart with "Kick The Dust Up" at #26. " Get That Love " - Thompson Twins from the album Close To The Bone (1987) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #31 (one week) Weeks in the Top-40: 5 Today's SOTD comes from the new wave group Thompson Twins, who were last seen with their Here's To Future Days album, which spun off a pair of top-10 pop hits in America with " Lay Your Hands On Me " and " King For A Day ". Member Joe Leeway left the band in 1985, reducing them to a "true" duo of Tom Bailey and Alannah Currie. The two released their next album, Close To The Bone , in 1987, with the first single, "Get That Love", sounding not too far off from "King...."... "Get That Love" reached the American top-40 in May of 1987, while in their native Britain the single stalled down at #66. (Click below to see the rest of the post)

" Wanted Dead Or Alive " - Bon Jovi from the album Slippery When Wet (1986) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #7 (three weeks) Weeks in the Top-40: 12 Today's SOTD comes from the Jersey-bred hard rock band Bon Jovi , whose third album Slippery When Wet had already scored them a pair of #1 pop hits with " You Give Love A Bad Name " and " Livin' On A Prayer ". Their third single from the record took them to the "wild, wild west" with the gritty power-balladry of "Wanted Dead Or Alive". Comparing their life as rock stars to cowboys of old, it inspired a slew of metal acts in the 80s to follow... "Wanted Dead Or Alive" became the third top-10 pop hit from Slippery ... in June of 1987, while climbing to #13 on Billboard 's Mainstream Rock radio chart. Internationally, the single made the top-10 in Ireland and New Zealand, and top-20 in the UK, Canada, and the Netherlands. (Click below to see the rest of the post...

" If She Would Have Been Faithful " - Chicago from the album Chicago 18 (1986) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #17 (one week) Weeks in the Top-40: 8 Today's SOTD comes from the veteran jazz-rock band turned soft-pop hitmakers Chicago , whose second David Foster-produced set Chicago 18 had scored them their first post-Peter Cetera hit with " Will You Still Love Me? ". Their follow-up was yet another mid-tempo ballad, "If She Would Have Been Faithful". Written by Aussie Steve Kipner, who co-wrote Olivia Newton-John's "Physical" as well as Chicago's hit "Hard Habit To Break", along with Randy Goodrum, who penned fellow soft rock band Toto's "I'll Be Over You", the single was a "glass half full" of the remains of being cheating on, allowing the protagonist to find someone better. And the horn work in the background is quite sweet as well, and bandmates Jason Scheff and Bill Champlin trading vocals ...

" Always " - Atlantic Starr from the album All In The Name Of Love (1987) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #1 (one week) Weeks in the Top-40: 14 Today's SOTD comes from the R&B band Atlantic Starr, who strayed from their funk and post-disco roots to score a mainstream pop hit with their 1985 single " Secret Lovers ". However, none of the seven other singles from the record made more than a minor dent on pop radio. So when it came time to release their next album, All In The Name Of Love , they wasted no time, releasing another sugary ballad out of the box. In this case, as opposed to the cheating motif of "Secret Lovers", they went straight to the wedding chapel with the reception-ready "Always". Written and produced by sibling band members David, Wayne, and Jonathan Lewis, the song brought out every Hallmark cliche' you can conjure up, but as a "duet" between Lewis and co-lead singer Sharon Bryant it did have a sweetness t...

It's time to start catching up from my weekend away with the first "make-up" "chart sweep", checking out the songs making their way on to the various singles charts in Billboard magazine. As usual I'll begin with the latest pop hits... On the "Big" chart, Billboard 's Hot 100 , which combines tallies of radio airplay from all genres, sales, and internet streaming, Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth spend a sixth week on top with "See You Again"... The song making the highest debut this week is from country singer Chris Young, whose "I'm Coming Over" jumps in at #57. It's the first single from his upcoming fifth album. Three of his previous singles have made the top-40 on this chart with " Gettin' You Home (The Black Dress Song) " reaching #33 in 2009... (Click below to see the rest of the post)

Robbed Hit of the Week 5/26/15 - the Beastie Boys' "Brass Monkey"...

Image
" Brass Monkey " - Beastie Boys from the album Licensed To Ill (1986) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #48 This week's "robbed hit" comes from the New York bratty-rap trio Beastie Boys , whose novelty rock-rap mashup " (You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party) " landed them a surprise top-10 pop hit as well as a crazy successful #1 album in Licensed To Ill . Instead of pushing out another ready-friendly single though, the Boys put out the street-silly "Brass Monkey". Named for a cocktail, the song had no form recognizable in pop but stayed metrically true to the hip hop they were enamored with... "Brass Monkey" nearly got them another top-40 hit, landing below that level in April of 1987. The single also nicked the R&B chart in Billboard at #83.

"Want To Want Me" - Jason Derulo (DEBUT) French-Comoran rapper Alonzo, from the hip-hop group Psy De La Rime lands his second top-10 hit with fellow rapper Jul (his first) with "Normal". Last year Alonzo went to #7 with "Meme Tarif". (There's no official YouTube clip for this... boo!) American R&B/...

" The Right Thing " - Simply Red from the album Men And Women (1987) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #27 (two weeks) Weeks in the Top-40: 6 Today's SOTD comes from the British "blue-eyed soul" band Simply Red , whose charismatic and vocally impressive lead singer Mick Hucknall led them to a #1 hit in America in 1986 with " Holding Back The Years " and a top-40 follow-up with " Money's Too Tight To Mention ". The following year the group released their sophomore effort, Men And Women , which "cleaned up" their look and strengthened their R&B cred with a few tracks co-written by Motown songsmith Lamont Dozier. The first single from the set, "The Right Thing", was a slinky and suggestive number written by Hucknall that featured a brighter and funkier horn section in the back... "The Right Thing" became Simply Red's third top-40 pop hit in America in May of 1987. In their native Britain the track m...

" You Keep Me Hangin' On " - Kim Wilde from the album Another Step (1986) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #1 (one week) Weeks in the Top-40: 13 Today's SOTD comes from British singer Kim Wilde , who was last seen riding the early new wave invasion from England in 1982 with her top-40 pop hit " Kids In America ". After the follow-up single from her debut, " Chequered Love ", also made the top-5 in the UK, she continued to have more moderate success there, only reappearing in America with a minor hit in " The Second Time (Go For It) " in 1984. Switching labels to MCA, Wilde released her fifth album Another Step in 1986. The first American single from the set was a HI-NRG cover of the Motown classic "You Keep Me Hangin' On", which Diana and the Supremes took to #1 in 1966 (when Kim was six years old)... Kim's club version, produced by her brother Ricky, sped up the tempo to a frantic level, with her more "angry...

" Se La " - Lionel Richie from the album Dancing On The Ceiling (1986) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #20 (two weeks) Weeks in the Top-40: 7 Today's SOTD comes from 80s pop superstar Lionel Richie , whose Dancing On The Ceiling album had already spun off four top-10 pop hits with the title track , " Love Will Conquer All ", " Ballerina Girl ", and the #1 " Say You, Say Me ". The fifth single pulled from the record was the reggae-lite of "Se La", written by Richie with Greg Phillinganes. Roughly translated from Spanish as "Is The", I guess he might have been goin' for the French phrase "C'est La Vie" ("That's Life").... "Se La" became the fifth top-20 hit from Dancing On The Ceiling in May of 1987. The record did much better at the adult contemporary (or "easy listening") format, where it peaked at #5, and the R&B chart, where it stopped at #12. International...

" I Know What I Like " - Huey Lewis & The News from the album Fore! (1986) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #9 (one week) Weeks in the Top-40: 10 Today's SOTD comes from the squeaky-clean bar-rock band Huey Lewis & The News , whose punny fourth album Fore! had rewarded them with a pair of #1 pop hits with " Stuck With You " and " Jacob's Ladder " and a not-too-shabby #3 " Hip To Be Square ". Like the latter song, the guys enlisted the help of a few football players including hometown hero Joe Montana to "sing" (more like grunt) backup on their fourth single "I Know What I Like". The lyrics "I like the sound of broken glass" is a callback to their early days in Britain backing up the likes of Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe, whose song is referenced... "I Know What I Like" became the fourth top-10 pop hit off of Fore! in May of 1987. The record also crossed over to both the Mainstream Ro...

" Right On Track " - The Breakfast Club from the album Breakfast Club (1987) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #7 (one week) Weeks in the Top-40: 11 Today's SOTD comes from the dance/pop band The Breakfast Club, who started out in the late 70s in New York. With a fluid line-up that once sported the one and only Madonna, the group solidified under lead singer Dan Gilroy and drummer/producer Stephen Bray (both former boyfriends of the Material Girl), who also helped Madge with some of her early big hits, like "Angel" and "Into The Groove". They released their self-titled debut album in 1987, and the first single, "Right On Track", ably rode the dance-pop train to land their biggest hit... "Right On Track" became the Breakfast Club's sole top-40 pop hit, reaching #7 in May of 1987. The record also peaked at #2 on Billboard 's Dance Club Play chart, and even crossed over to their R&B list at #64. The single was a minor ...

" Big Love " - Fleetwood Mac from the album Tango In The Night (1987) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #5 (one week) Weeks in the Top-40: 11 Today's SOTD comes from the British-American rock band Fleetwood Mac , who last were here with their 1982 album Mirage , which scored a trio of top-40 pop hits in the U.S. including the #4 single " Hold Me ". After a long five-year break that saw members Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham, and Stevie Nicks (twice) release successful solo albums, the band reappeared in 1987 with their Tango In The Night set. Starting out as another Buckingham solo album, the first single from the project, "Big Love", carried over his experimental sonics and time signatures, and with Mick Fleetwood and John McVie's legendary rhythm section along to anchor the pulse of the song, it pushed the limits of what "Fleetwood Mac's sound" was. And to charm MTV, the brought a half-million-dollar music video to the party.....

" Talk Dirty To Me " - Poison from the album Look What The Cat Dragged In (1986) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #9 (one week) Weeks in the Top-40: 9 Today's SOTD is by the glam-metal band Poison , who came made up and pouffed out from the heartland of central Pennsylvania to land in Los Angeles to take advantage of the bustling hard rock club scene. With lead singer Bret Michaels, drummer Ricki Rockett, and bass player Bobby Dall, the band recruited L.A. local C.C. Deville after their original guitarist left. They released their debut album Look What The Cat Dragged In in the summer of 1986, but after a first single, " Cry Tough ", that stiffed, it wasn't until the spring of next year that they broke through with the follow-up. "Talk Dirty To Me", written by the band and produced by Ric Browde, had the right combination of playful antics and guitar crunch to grab the kids' attention and enough hinted nastiness without actually saying anythi...

" Heat Of The Night " - Bryan Adams from the album Into The Fire (1987) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #6 (two weeks) Weeks in the Top-40: 10 Today's SOTD comes from Canadian mainstream rock singer/songwriter Bryan Adams , whose fourth album Reckless was one of the biggest records of the decade, spinning off six top-40 pop hits in the U.S., including the #1 " Heaven ". After a worldwide tour, Bryan released his next album, Into The Fire , in 1987. The first single from the set, "Heat Of The Night", was more memorable in the fact that it was hyped as the first single release on cassette, or "cassingle", in major release (which did cause me to run to my local Peaches store in Chicago to pick it up)... "Heat Of The Night" became Bryan's fifth top-10 pop hit in America in May of 1987, while climbing all the way to #2 on Billboard 's Mainstream Rock radio chart. Internationally, the record went top-10 in Sweden, Norway,...

Image
" Show Me " - The Cover Girls from the album Show Me (1986) Billboard Hot 100 peak: #44 This week's "robbed hit" comes from the Latin "freestyle" dance trio the Cover Girls, who were put together by producer Andy Tripoli in New York in the mid-80s. With lead singer Angel Clivilles (wife of C&C Music Factory's Robert Clivilles) along with Caroline Jackson and Sunshine Wright, their first album Show Me was a benchmark in the genre, eventually spinning off five singles on the pop charts. The first was the title track, written by Tripoli with mixers Tony Moran, Albert Cabrera, and Bob Khozouri, and sounded like the Latina singalong version of Bananarama... "Show Me" spent 18 weeks on the Hot 100, but stopped short of the Top-40 in May of 1987. The single also climbed to #34 on Billboard 's R&B chart, and peaked at #4 on their Dance Club play list. But the number belie how big this song was in the urban areas of Amer...
