Today's Song of the day comes from Timbuk 3, an "indie rock" duo of husband and wife Pat and Barbara McDonald. Hailing from Wisconsin and signed to R.E.M.'s label IRS after appearing on the MTV modern rock show, the pair released their debut album in 1986. The first single, the overly optimistic "The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades"...
"The Future's So Bright..." became Timbuk 3's first and only pop top-20 hit in December of 1986, while climbing to #14 on Billboard magazine's Mainstream Rock radio chart. Internationally, the single made the top-40 in Canada, England, Ireland, and New Zealand. After this, the duo released the opposite-titled track "Life Is Hard", which still was a top-40 rock hit, and the pair surprisingly garnered a Best New Artist nomination at the 1987 Grammys, losing to Bruce Hornsby & The Range. In 1988 Timbuk3 released a second album, Eden Alley, which spun off a top-40 rock hit with "Rev. Jack & His Roamin' Cadillac Church", and then a few more records before splitting in 1995.
