Songoftheday 5/21/14 - No-one on earth could feel like this, I'm thrown and overblown with bliss...

Eurythmics - "There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)"
from the album Be Yourself Tonight (1985)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #22 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 7

Today's Song of the Day comes from the new wave duo Eurythmics, whose fifth album Be Yourself Tonight moved them more from the electronics to the electric (as in guitar), as demonstrated by their top-5 pop hit "Would I Lie To You?". While their second single from the set, "There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)" put the synths back as the main instrument, Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart show their range with an absolutely ebullient display of love and expectation that even though you're not sure how it's going to end, it's certainly worth the trip, especially with Stevie Wonder gifting the pair with a harmonica solo...

"There Must Be An Angel" became the duo's lucky seventh top-40 pop hit in the U.S. in September of 1985, while climbing up to #31 on Billboard magazine's Dance Club Play chart. In their native Britain, however, the single ended up becoming their first and only song to reach #1 during their career. It ended up being one of their biggest worldwide hits, going top ten all over Europe...

And on any given day there's a more than good chance this would be my answer for my favorite Eurythmics song. It just makes me feel really happy inside.

Another German singer, Max Raabe, took the record back to the 30s with his cover from the same year..

...and of course a version close to my heart is from Kylie Minogue's 2011 Aphrodite tour, which I deliriously saw three times...

I'll leave with an acoustic take from the Eurythmics from a British TV appearance...
