Robbed Hit of the Week: Patti LaBelle's "Stir It Up"....

Patti LaBelle - "Stir It Up"
from the album Beverly Hills Cop (Original Soundtrack) (1985)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #41

This week's "robbed hit" comes from Patti LaBelle, who finally scored her first top-40 pop hit in 1985 with an upbeat dance-pop single from the Eddie Murphy movie Beverly Hills Cop, "New Attitude". Her second track on the album, "Stir It Up", was released as the fifth and final single. Written by Dan Sembello ("Maniac" Michael's brother) and Aimee Willis, the pair who also penned "The Neutron Dance" for the album, "Stir It Up" continued in the dance-pop makeover of the soul icon...

While the single was a big hit on R&B radio, peaking at #5 on that chart, and climbing to #18 on Billboard's Dance club play list, the single stopped one rung short of the pop top-40 in the U.S. in August of 1985. Frustrating position, for such a fun record, but Patti would make up for it with her next appearance on the pop chart in 1986 with the #1 "On My Own"...

Here's Patti singing "Stir It Up" along with "Over The Rainbow" in her hometown Philly for Live Aid in 1985. (Though her mike went out)...

In 2005, British blue-eyed soul singer Joss Stone brought Patti on for an update of "Stir It Up" for the movie Stuart Little that was a hit in Japan..

and just because, here's Patti miming "Stir It Up" before stirring it up with Roddy Piper (swoon) and Cyndi Lauper, and somehow, Pee Wee Herman and Herve Villachaize from Fantasy Island....
