Robbed hit of the week 6/22/15 - Cameo's "Back and Forth"...

"Back and Forth" - Cameo
from the album Word Up! (1986)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #50

This week's "robbed hit" comes from the funk band Cameo, whose 1986 album Word Up broke them through to mainstream pop radio in a big way with their top-10 title track and follow-up "Candy" that ended up being used to back a Mariah #1 hit. The third single from the record was the slinky mid-tempo dance track "Back and Forth", written by the band but dominated by cod-pieced leader Larry Blackmon. Jazz legend Miles Davis even makes a "cameo" in the video...

While "Back and Forth" reached the top-10 on both the R&B (#3) and Dance Club Play (#6) charts in Billboard, the single stopped short at the halfway point on the Hot 100 pop list. Across the pond, the song did even better, reaching #10 in Ireland and #11 in the United Kingdom.

Here's the club remix that went to #6 on the dance charts...

In 2000, rap royalty the Wu-Tang Clan interpolated the chorus on their single "Gravel Pit", which went to #6 in the UK, and #70 on the American R&B chart...

..and finally, the band live in 2012...
