Pop Sweep: May 2, 2015...


It's time to roll out the first of today's "chart sweeps", checking out the songs making their debut on the various singles charts in Billboard magazine. Although a day late, I'll be covering the pop side of things first as usual, then later in the day move on to the newest in rock, R&B, country and dance music...

On the "big" chart, Billboard's Hot 100, which combines tallies from internet streaming (like Spotify and YouTube), radio airplay from all formats, and sales (like AmazonMP3 or iTunes), Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth spend a second week on top with "See You Again"...

Rap newcomer T-Wayne claims the top new entry on the chart at #43 with his track "Nasty Freestyle", which has gained steam through its use in Vine videos...

Singer/songwriter Rachel Platten lands her first Hot 100 hit as "Fight Song" punches in at #80. It's my "Pop Pick of the Week", and it's already up at #17 on the Adult Top-40 format...



Thanks to its inclusion on the superstar start-up streaming service Tidal, Rihanna's "American Oxygen" breathes in at #91.


The third single from country star Blake Shelton's Bringing Back The Sunshine album, "Sangria", flows in at #93. The first, "Neon Light", peaked at #43 last year...


Rapper Kid Ink returns at #96 with "Be Real" featuring DeJ Loaf. It's the third Hot 100 entry from his Full Speed album. "Body Language" made it to #72...


Two of the finalists on this season's The Voice make the list this week. First at #98 is Sawyer Fredericks from Pharrell Williams' "team" with his performance of John Lennon's "Imagine". The original went to #3 back in 1971, nearly 30 years before Sawyer was born...


New York alt-rock band X Ambassadors pop into the chart for a second time with "Renegades" at #99. Last year they climbed in at #87 with the Jay-Z-assisted "Jungle"...


The second of the Voice entries at #100 is Kimberly Nichole (from Christina Aguilera's "team") with her take on "The House Of The Rising Sun". The Animals took the classic to #1 in 1964, while Frijid Pink brought it back to the top-10 in 1970...


And now on to the pop radio format charts...

On the Mainstream Top-40 radio panel, Ellie Goulding moves to #1 for her second time with "Love Me Like You Do". Back in 2012 she led with "Lights"..

Disney stable pop/rock band R5 come in at #38 with "Let's Not Be Alone Tonight"...


Sia follows up her solo breakthrough single "Chandelier", which went to #11 on this list, with "Elastic Heart", which is in at #39...


Meanwhile, on the older-skewing Adult Top-40 format, Maroon 5's "Sugar" is on top for a second week...

Russo-German DJ/producer Zedd locks in at #36 with "I Want You To Know" featuring vocals from Selena Gomez. His previous single "Clarity" went to #16 on this format...


YouTube star Tori Kelly enters at #37 with her "Nobody Love"...


British singer Katy Tiz arrives at #38 with "Whistle (While You Work It)"...


Lastly, on the Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") chart, Ed Sheeran holds at #1 for a seventh week with "Thinking Out Loud", while the aforementioned "Fight Song" is the sole new entry at #24...
