Songoftheday 5/13/14 - Everyday I hear a different story people say that you're no good for me...

Wham! - "Freedom"
from the album Make It Big (1984)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #3 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 12

Today's Song of the Day is by the British pop duo Wham! whose second album Make It Big truly lived up to its name, placing its first three singles "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go", "Careless Whisper", and "Everything She Wants" at #1 on the American pop chart. Now that they were now in the "big-leagues", the pair released a fourth single from the project, the Motown-ish pop of "Freedom". Written and sung by George Michael, the song was simple yet effective, with George declaring he'd rather be stuck with the one he loves than be able to run around (a difference from the last go on "Everything...). The music video was filmed on their groundbreaking tour of China...

"Freedom" became the fourth top-5 pop hit in America for the duo in September of 1985, while climbing to #4 on the adult contemporary radio chart in Billboard magazine as well. Internationally, the single became Wham!'s second #1 hit in their native England ("Careless Whisper" was credited to George Michael alone in the UK), while also topping the chart in neighboring Ireland and up in Norway.

and here's the boys (before they became too "big") on Top Of The Pops miming the song...

Up tomorrow: the glam-metal boys get caught lit up in the loo.
