Today's Song of the Day comes from Prince, who's post-Purple Rain psychedelic album Around The World In A Day had already sent its first single "Raspberry Beret" to #2 on the pop chart in 1985. For its second release the "Purple One" went even more direct to his involvement with the music medium he is now working in. With lyrics that recount everyday nastiness that not only pop music takes you away from, but never addresses, it's a love/hate relationship with the mainstream that Prince is wrestling with...

"Pop Life" became the second top-40 "pop" hit in America in September of 1985, while peaking one notch under that on the R&B chart, and it climbed to #5 on Billboard's dance club play list. Internationally, the single never really took off, missing the top-40 in England, Australia, Germany, and New Zealand, though it did manage to make it to #29 in Ireland.

Now maybe that Prince and Warner Brothers are all made up, perhaps they can get his videos on VEVO?
