Songoftheday 8/9/23 - Give me just a second and I'll be all right, surely one more moment couldn't break my heart...

"Gotta Get Thru This" - Daniel Bedingfield
from the album Gotta Get Thru This (2002)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #10 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 17

Today's song comes from Daniel Bedingfield, who was born and grew up in New Zealand before moving to England to start his music career. Daniel wrote and self-produced his first single in his own bedroom, "Gotta Get Thru This", which he shopped out to DJ's before getting signed to Polydor Records (and eventually Island Records in the United States).  The lyrics are pretty simple - Daniel is pining for a lover and is trying to calm his anxiety over the separation down. The production, helped by the D'N'D team, is still sparse which barely frames Bedingfield's nasal delivery. It doesn't hinder the track too much, but it's definitely there. It's more about the UK garage-style groove, the "two-step" that doesn't have anything to do with country music. The result is slick but still indie-sounding, and became a big hit in Britain, and in time across the pond....

"Gotta Get Thru This" reached the top ten on Billboard magazine's Hot 100 in September of 2002. On the radio, the song peaked at #3 on the Mainstream Top-40 airplay chart, #15 on the Dance Airplay list, and #14 on the dance/R&B-oriented Rhythmic format. The remixes of the track, done by Stella Browne, helped it spend a week at #1 on Billboard's Dance Club Play chart as well. Internationally, the single topped the British singles chart for three non-consecutive weeks, and made the top ten in Canada (#5) and Australia (#10), and reached the top-40 in New Zealand (#12), Denmark (#14), Ireland (#15), Belgium (#27 Flanders), and the Netherlands (#32). The Gotta Get Thru This album, released in August of that year, stopped just short of the top-40 at #41 on the Billboard 200 sales tally, going on to sell over a half million copies. At the Grammy Awards in 2003, "I'm Gonna Get Thru This" was nominated for Best Dance Recording, losing to Dirty Vegas for "Days Go By".

Both Daniel and the album will be back to the series.
