Songoftheday 8/24/23 - Can I have you for a minute? Don't get shy 'coz my heart's in it when I say you got me strung out...

"Stingy" - Ginuwine
from the albums Barbershop (Original Soundtrack) (2002) and The Senior (2003)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #33 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 6

Today's song comes from R&B singer Ginuwine, whose third album The Life had returned him to the top ten on Billboard magazine's Hot 100 in the autumn of 2001 with "Differences".  A year later, he was featured on part two of Sean "P. Diddy" Combs' single "I Need A Girl" which went to #4 (like "Differences" did). At about that time, Ginuwine also released a new solo single which was featured on the soundtrack to the urban comedy movie Barbershop starring rappers Ice Cube and Eve as well as future TV star Anthony Anderson. "Stingy", written by Johnta Austin along with producers Bryan-Michael Cox and Jason Perry, the lyrics have Ginuwine professing that he wants to monopolize his lover's time with the "stingy" part weirdly applied to him not wanting to share with others, including her family, which is creepy as f**k. I mean, he throws in lines like
Do what you want, anything, anythingI am all yoursYou can do no wrong, everything, everythingI do because I'm so wide open
but it doesn't seem convincing in the context of the rest of the words. The production plods along clumsily as his vocals flit around the melody adequately. Nevertheless, the song and his charm won over enough to bring him back to the charts...

"Stingy" reached the top-40 on Billboard's Hot 100 in September of 2002, while climbing to #7 on their R&B Singles chart. On the radio, the song also made it to #19 on the older skewing Adult Top-40 radio panel. The Barbershop soundtrack, released in August of that year, reached #29 on the Billboard 200 sales tally, and #9 on the R&B Albums list. "Stingy" would also end up on Ginuwine's fourth album The Senior, which was released in April of 2003 and went to #6 on the Billboard 200 and spent a week at #1 on the R&B Albums list, going on to sell over a half million copies.

Ginuwine and the Senior album will be back to the series, as well as the Barbershop soundtrack REAL soon.
