Twostepcub's New Music Roundup 3/25/23...

It's time for my weekly new music roundup, where I feature the big entries on the Hot 100 as well as my personal choices of the songs making the various radio charts in Billboard magazine, as well as on the charts in the United Kingdom.  This week, the Hot 100 only sees five new entries, four of them from Miley Cyrus' new album, but there's some nuggets spread around the different charts.

from the album Endless Summer Vacation (2023)
Billboard Hot 100 debut: #32
Billboard Pop Airplay debut: #27
Billboard Adult Top-40 Airplay debut: #26
Billboard Dance/Electronic Songs debut: #2
Official British Singles chart debut: #16
British Singles Sales debut: #38

The biggest debut on the big chart is Miley's electrodance number from her new album. For me, it's a little busy, trying so hard to get Billboard to place it on their Dance chart (which apparently worked), but it could've used the "less is more" adage. It's still better than half the fodder that populates the dance chart though.

Billboard Hot 100 debut: #56
British Singles chart debut: #27

On the other hand, this dramatic number is a better compliment to where "Flowers" took Miley, and her voice just grabs me on this.

Billboard Hot 100 debut: #68

In this one Miley teams up with sapphic rock goddess Carlisle for a pleasant if not overwhelming album cut. Maybe I wanted more from Brandi on this.

Pop Airplay debut: #37
Adult Top-40 Airplay debut: #37

This is loud. Very loud. The young woman who gave us commentary on the lingerie business is back with a take on a fairy tale that's heavily branded, using the Avril Lavigne template to put it across. I know my 10 year old nephew is gonna loooooove this one.

"No Bad Days" - Macklemore featuring Collett
from the album Ben (2023)
Pop Airplay debut: #40

90% of the reason I included this was the music video, which has the rapper's daughter, and it so cute it's practically diabetic. I have no idea who Collett is, though.

from the album The Record (2023)
Billboard Rock & Alternative Airplay debut: #39
Billboard Adult Album Alternative (Triple-A) Rock Airplay debut: #17

The all-female indie rock supergroup scores again with this breezy jangle-pop track that's perfect for these first days of being able to roll the windows down in the car.

from the album Asking For A Ride (2023)
Billboard Mainstream Rock Airplay debut: #39

The band who recently topped the Triple-A (or "hipster") Rock chart with the more sedate "Pages" goes all out on the energy with this power-pop explosion that sounds like the second coming of Cheap Trick doing glam music.

from the album Living In A Haze (2023)
Billboard Alternative Rock Airplay debut: #36

Ladies and Gentlemen, "I wish I was a disco boy, movin' like I was paranoid.". The German duo goes full electro-rock in this peppy little number that's quite the earworm.

from the album 10,000 gecs (2023)
Alternative Rock Airplay debut: #38

Speaking about electro-rock duos, this St. Louis pair has got me hook on this crunchy and snarky jam with lyrics that still make me giggle four listens in.

from the The Sun (2023)
Triple-A Rock Airplay debut: #38

If you're loving the new boygenius project you should definitely give this sister trio a listen as well. There's great vocal interplay and a classic pop styling on this tune.

from the album In Between Thoughts...A New World (2023)
Triple-A Rock Airplay debut: #39

After a four year break the Mexican jazz-rock duo return, and this is simply incredible. My favorite instrumental of the year so far, the intricacies in the course of the song take me on a journey in my brain. Amazing.

from the album Standing Room Only (2023)
Billboard Country Airplay debut: #20

Yes, this is pretty basic, as its probably force-fed to Tim by Scott Borchetta, but it's effin' Tim McGraw, and it's great to hear the now-elder of the country music scene back in a big way on the radio.

from the single (2023)
Country Airplay debut: #54

After delivering one of the best albums of last year with the feisty song cycle Lindeville, which was criminally ignored by country radio, Ashley is back to a much more restained tone, with this almost rehash of "I Hope You Dance". At least McBryde can win me over with her turn of phrase and how she sings things.

Country Airplay debut: #58

Imagine if Kane Brown and Luke Combs merged and you'd get newcomer Dover, which his barnburning ballad that shows off his voice quite well. Trust me, if you like Combs, you'll love this.

from the album Let's Do Country Right (2023)
Country Airplay debut: #60

Ok folks, here's your engagement post backing track right here. It's great hearing Corbin as always, his voice is like velvet to my ears.

from the single (2023)
Dance/Electronic Songs debut: #6
British Singles chart debut: #3
British Singles Airplay debut: #9
British Singles Sales debut: #1

Ellie's still trying to have her comeback, and this EDM excursion is promising, with a strange familiarity to Robert Miles' "Children" from the 90's. (I prefer her own "Like A Saviour" much better.)

from the single (2023)
Dance/Electronic Songs debut: #12

Now this is the dance jam of the week. After their success with Elton John & Dua Lipa, the Australian remixing team recruit American new generation soul artist Khalid for this neo-disco song that sound like a 1974 hit redone for the clubs this year. Such a great listen in the car and the gym.

I'll be back tomorrow for my reviews and picks of the albums hitting the charts this week. Cheers!
