Twostepcub's New Albums Roundup 3/19/23...

It's time for my weekly new albums roundup, where I take a look at the big albums on this week's American and British albums charts, along with my choices of the new records I think you should check out. To catch up on this week's singles round, you can click here

This week has two albums making their debut in the top ten on the Billboard 200, which combines sales and streaming, with the obvious big story at #1, while those two plus three others enter that level on the Current Albums Sales list.

Billboard 200 debut: #1
Billboard Current Albums Sales debut: #1
Official British Albums chart debut: #40
Choice cut: "Thought You Should Know"

I've laid out my problems with this release in yesterday's singles recap (since every one of the 36 tracks made the Hot 100). One Thing At A Time is completely overbloated, repetitive, and vacillates constantly between drinking and breakup songs that are like the same song put through Google translate and back a bunch of times. Mind you, I believe that's a reason this only sold 24,000 physical CD's. There are 10 worthy songs here, and this would've been a nice tight 12-track at the most, including this open letter to his mother.

Billboard 200 debut: #4
Current Albums Sales debut: #3
British Albums chart debut: #52
Choice cut: "Worth The Wait" with Omar Apollo

The singer who mines her paternal Colombian heritage to infuse her brand of R&B finally follows up her breakthrough top-40 pop hit "Telepatia" with this airy collection of bedroom tales including this trippy jam with Omar Apollo.

Billboard 200 debut: #13
Current Albums Sales debut: #2
Choice cut:  "Faster"

This K-pop R&B set isn't marketed to people like me, but I can appreciate the dirty synthbass on this track.

Billboard 200 debut: #18
Current Albums Sales debut: #4
Choice cut: "Chant" with Tones and I

The rapper tackles his relapse during the lockdowns with a diverse set of sounds, and laying his heart bare with this gem with underrated Aussie singer Tones and I.

Billboard 200 debut: #96
Current Albums Sales debut: #9
British Albums chart debut: #46
Choice cut: "Regret Me"

So now we have The Heights for the indie-rock set, as this Amazon Prime series gets a "soundtrack" from the songs in the show. It's pleasant, but a pastiche of the genre.

Current Albums Sales debut: #13
Choice cut: "This House Is Empty Now"

This exquisite collection of collaboration between one of the best songwriters in our lifetime along with the voice of the "new rock and roll" in a whole new light. Elvis' voice really shines in this set, whether in the studio like this or in concert. Both are represented in the deluxe version. Essential listening.

Current Albums Sales debut: #28
Choice cut: "The Alphabet Of Me"

The British progressive metal act returns with original keyboardist Peter Jones for a clean yet intricate set of song cycles about animals.

Current Albums Sales debut: #49
Choice cut: "Norfolk Blues"

Instead of indulging on Wallen's bleating hip-hop country frankenstein, treat yourselves to a much better collection of stories and a voice that's clearly seen things. A great country record for these downtrodden times.

Current Albums Sales debut: #53
Choice cut: "Sad Disco"

You'd never guess this moody indie rock band was from Florida, but nonetheless their debut is a nice listen for a rainy night in.

Current Albums Sales debut: #79
British Albums Sales debut: #4
Choice cut: "House On Fire"

British popster finally gets a full-length album that's already stacked with proven hits and has many more hidden nuggets underneath.
British Albums chart debut: #1
Choice cut: "Sad Face Baby"

It's mind-shaking how this power punch of rockers from the Wiggan band tops the British chart yet is nowhere in America. Give it a try.

British Albums chart debut: #2
Choice cut: "Selfish"

The British rapper incorporates punk and electro-rock influences in his third set that's a hard but captivating listen.
