"Oops (Oh My)" - Tweet
from the album Southern Hummingbird (2002)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #7 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 15
Today's song comes from R&B singer Tweet, who grew up Charlene Keys in upstate New York, before starting her career as a member of a vocal group Sugah. Although that act never got anywhere, Tweet got the attention of writer/producer/artist Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott, who signed Tweet to her Elektra-distributed label Gold Mind. She guested on a few tracks from various artists, including Elliott, who featured Tweet on her single "Take Away", which nearly made the pop Top-40. Keys recorded her debut album Southern Hummingbird, preceded by the single "Oops (Oh Me)", written by the singer with Missy, and co-produced by Tim "Timbaland" Mosley. The lyrics have Tweet describing the effect this man has on her. This mostly includes her clothes falling off in ecstasy, though she "turns red" as his caress. In fact, the whole thing may just be insinuating Tweet pleasuring her own self over the fantasy. This is over one of Timbaland's most infectious beats, which really make the single. Tweet showed her stage presence in the music video, which included Missy spitting off a few bars. In return, the singer found herself with her first and by far biggest hit...
"Oops" became Tweet's first (and only) top ten hit on Billboard magazine's Hot 100 chart in May of 2002, while spending three weeks at #1 on their R&B Singles chart. On the radio, the song climbed to #13 on the Mainstream Top-40 Airplay chart, took four weeks at #1 on the R&B Airplay list, and peaked at #4 on the dance-oriented Rhythmic format. Internationally, the single rose to #5 in the United Kingdom, and made the top-40 in Australia (#18), Germany (#23), Canada (#26), The Netherlands (#32), Sweden (#34), Switzerland (#36), and New Zealand (#38). The Southern Hummingbird album, released in April of that year, spent a week at #3 on the Billboard 200 sales tally, and took three weeks at #2 on the R&B Albums list, going on to sell over a half-million copies.
Both Tweet and the album will be back to the series.
