Robbed Hit of the week 3/20/23 - Missy Elliott's "Take Away"...
"Take Away" - Missy Elliott featuring Ginuwine & Tweet
from the album Miss E...So Addictive (2001)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #45
This week's "robbed hit" comes from rapper/singer Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott, whose third album Miss E...So Addictive had scored a top ten pop hit with "Get Ur Freak On" and a top-20 follow-up with "One Minute Man". The third radio single from the record was "Take Away", which she again collaborated on with producer Tim "Timbaland" Mosley. In the song Missy proclaims that her love is not materialistic, and if they took away the bling she sings that would still be there. The record featured R&B singer Ginuwine, who had just scored a top ten pop hit with "Differences" in the autumn of 2001. Although Kemeelah Williams of the vocal group 702 sang backup on the album, Elliott protege Tweet (aka Charlene Keys) was substituted on the single version. Missy put a tribute to singer Aaliyah at the start of the video, and added a tag of song "4 My People" at the end...
While "Take Away" climbed up to #13 on Billboard magazine's R&B Singles chart, it stalled under the pop top-40 on the Hot 100 in February of 2002. On the radio, the song peaked at #12 on the R&B Airplay chart and #29 on the dance-oriented Rhythmic format.
