twostepcub's New Music Roundup 12/31/22...

Good morning on the last day of 2022. It's time to check out my choices of the songs reaching the various singles charts in Billboard magazine in the US as well as the Official British Chart in the UK. It's another slow holiday week, which is fine by me.

Billboard Alternative Rock Airplay debut: #39

The Hawaiian band that calls Utah their home now deliver the jangle-pop gem that seems plucked from the 80s with Tyke James' echoed vocals over Addison Sharps guitar strums. A nice winter's listen.

Billboard Alternative Rock Airplay debut: #40

David Sanders, aka Jean Dawson, fuses pop-punk production with "trap" lyrics for this anger-releasing show of force.

"Playground" - Flipturn
from the album Shadowglow (2022)
Billboard Adult Album Alternative (Triple-A) Rock Airplay debut: #38

While pop stations are seemingly taking a holiday break, its a decent week for indie-rock bands that seem influenced by 80s new wave. As the Moss sound like they're channeling The Cure, this Florida band seems like they've studied Johnny Marr's work quite well.

from the album And In The Darkness, Hearts Aglow (2022)
Billboard Triple-A Rock Airplay debut: #39

My top pick for this week is the second single from Blood's stellar fifth album. I think this is what Lana Del Rey's fans think her music sounds like, but doesn't. Weyes' control of her vocals is so damn pristine yet wrung of emotion in this neo-folk epic.

Billboard Adult R&B Airplay debut: #29

Blind bluesman Jones covers the Chris Stapleton showstopper and injects some smooth soul into it, with a nice string section behind it. While it doesn't eclipse the original, Rob's "Cold" deserves a spin.

"Take Me Home" - VAVO & Clara Mae
from the single (2022)
Billboard Dance Airplay debut: #37

Canadian DJ Jesse Fischer and British counterpart Alden Martin recruit singer Clara Mae for this generic but nice-sounding lite Lithuanian house music bop that is a good add to your driving playlist.

Billboard Dance/Electronic Songs debut: #35

For the biopic of Whitney Houston's life, they've mined the archived for previously unreleased material, including this cover of a gospel song from BeBe and CeCe Winans that Whitney performed at an AIDS benefit concert in Los Angeles in 1994. DJ Sam Feldt drowns it in pumping bass to make it like Elton John's "Cold Heart" on steroids, but it's still delightful to hear her amazing voice in prime form just for the audience.

"Fuck The Tories" - The Kunts
from the single (2022)
Official British Singles Sales debut: #7

There should be no question why I love this. The comedic group that have been in the "race for the #1 single in the UK at Christmas" for the third year, the guys who gave us "Boris Johnson Is A Fucking Cunt" and "Boris Johnson Is Still A Fucking Cunt", didn't win the crown (the horrid LadBaby single did it), but they still had a third top ten hit in a row, deservedly taking the piss out of the party of the richies and old twats.

Official British Airplay debut: #27

Hey, if a favorite pop singer of mine, Sigrid, rates him high enough to open for her on tour, there must be something there, and this British newcomer's bubbly ode to the southern American state is a nice sing-along for the roadtrip.
