twostepcub's New Music Roundup 12/24/22...

It's time for this week's new music round-up, where I run down my picks of the latest singles on the various charts in the U.S. and in the United Kingdom. It's the week of Hanukkah and Christmas, so of course everything is really slow, but a new album from soul singer SZA at least threw some interest in the mix. All 20 new songs from the record made the Hot 100, and I'll single them out.

from the album SOS (2022)
Billboard Hot 100 debut: #10

Although it was "Kill Bill" than won the chart this week, entering the Hot 100 at #3, I much preferred the more exposed indie rock of this song, which still made the top ten.

"Blind" - SZA
from the album SOS (2022)
Hot 100 debut: #12

This moody piece that has SZA rapping and warbling about her romantic troubles is also a highlight, as you ride the unpercussed groove along with her. And I'm a sucker for a string section.

"Snooze" - SZA
from the album SOS (2022)
Hot 100 debut: #29

Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds lends a hand on this, co-producing and providing backup vocals, totally distorted to not distract from SZA rolling out this slow jam.

"Special" - SZA
from the album SOS (2022)
Hot 100 debut: #37

This is my favorite track on SOS, which just has SZA confessing her insecurities and bad choices over a strumming guitar in the back.

from the album SOS (2022)
Hot 100 debut: #40

SZA gets together with indie-rock princess Bridgers for this dreamlike track again where she reveals her troubles with the men in her history.

"F2F" - SZA
from the album SOS (2022)
Hot 100 debut: #55

This time she pairs with Lizzo and burns romantic bridges while recreating an Avril Lavigne single.

from the album Hell Paso (2022)
Billboard Mainstream Rock Airplay debut: #39
Billboard Alternative Rock Airplay debut: #40

Straddling fist-pumping barroom rock and country attitude, Wetzel brings us a storyline from The Walking Dead we didn't know we needed in the music video.

from the album Blue Rev (2022)
Billboard Adult Album Alternative (Triple-A) Rock Airplay debut: #35

The Canadian indie-rock band that were critical darlings this year with their third album finally get some radio love with this lo-fi buzz that hides some vulnerable lyrics.

from the album Anarchist Gospel (2023)
Billboard Triple-A Rock Airplay debut: #40

Fans of Brittany Howard, Joy Oludokun, and for that matter Joan Armatrading should give this assertive track a listen.

"Cafe" - Stokley featuring Wale
from the album Sankofa (2021)
Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay debut: #47

This neo-soul jam from the lead singer of Mint Condition is already in the top ten of the older-skewing Adult R&B Airplay chart, but finally makes his way on to the main list with this treat to your ears in headphones, between the bass and the harmonies. Wale's rap break doesn't disrupt the groove too much.

"When I Talk" - Kx5 (Kaskade & deadmau5) featuring Elderbrook
from the single (2022)
Billboard Dance/Electronic Songs debut: #24

The veterans of trance music reunite for another banger ready for your car playlist.

from the single (2022)
Billboard Dance/Electronic Songs debut: #49

While you're amending your car playlist, stick this neo-house nugget as well.

from the album From Nothing To A Little Bit More (2023)

The British alt-rock band who topped that country's albums chart with their first full-length set How Beautiful Life Can Be preview their sophomore effort with this propulsive track that shows they're keeping the Manchester rock legacy alive.
