"Southern Hospitality" - Ludacris
from the album Back For The First Time (2000)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #23 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 9
Today's song comes from rapper Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, whose debut single "What's Your Fantasy" became a top ten R&B hit that crossed over to Billboard magazine's pop Hot 100 top-40 at the close of 2000. The second single from the record is "Southern Hospitality", produced by the Neptunes (Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo). Ludacris' verses are the basic party braggadocio, with the first talking about his cars and "hoes", the second a sprinkling of drug references, and wrapping things up with some hip-hop fashion tips. But it's not the words but the music that makes this record, with Pharrell and Chad pumping a beat that is out of this world, and makes the single stand out from anything before, even more than their recent hits with Jay-Z and Mystikal, but more like their work with Kelis on "Caught Out There". The music video is heavy on humor and special effects, and kickstarted the song to be his second crossover hit. But again, it's the Neptunes that elevates this over his previous single...
"Southern Hospitality" scored Ludacris his second top-40 crossover pop hit in March of 2001. The song climbed to #6 on Billboard's R&B Singles chart, while getting to #5 on their Rap Singles list. On the radio, the track went to #10 on the dance-oriented Rhythmic format chart. Ludacris will be back to the series soon.
