Robbed hit of the week 8/1/22 - Carl Thomas' "Emotional"...
"Emotional" - Carl Thomas
from the album Emotional (2000)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #47
This week's "robbed hit" comes from R&B singer Carl Thomas, who had topped the chart in Billboard and made the pop top-20 with his debut single "I Wish". Thomas' follow-up single was the title track from his album "Emotional". The main song was written by Thomas and producer Mario Winans, built on a sample of Sting's 1993 minor hit "Shape Of My Heart" (UK #57), giving him and Dominic Miller writing credit. The minor-key melody on that record forms the foundation of "Emotional", with Carl breaking down over a break-up. It's a nuanced song, with Thomas placing fault on both sides, but still mournful for the relationship ending. It was a welcome add to R&B radio, and those stations responded favorably...
While "Emotional" made it to #8 on Billboard magazine's R&B Singles chart, the song stopped just above the half-way mark on the pop Hot 100 chart at the end of December of 2000. The track also climbed to #3 on the older-skewing Adult R&B radio format.
A third single from the debut album, "Summer Rain", peaked at #18 on the R&B Singles chart, and #80 on the Hot 100, while rising to #9 on the Adult R&B list.
