Songoftheday 12/6/20 - Can't understand how he can treat you the way that he does, give me the chance to show you baby you're better off with me...

"You Should Be Mine (Don't Waste My Time)" - Brian McKnight featuring Mase
from the album Anytime (1997)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #17 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 11

Today's song of the day comes from soul singer/songwriter Brian McKnight, who scored his first top-40 pop hit in the autumn of 1993 with the sad breakup ballad "One Last Cry".  Brian's sophomore effort, I Remember You, landed in the top-40 of the Billboard 200 sales chart for the first time, but sold half as much as his debut. The lead single from that set, a remake of Van Morrison's "Crazy Love" that also appeared in the movie Jason's Lyric, missed the pop top-40 by a handful of notches. So when it came time for Brian's third release, much like yesterday's SOTD artist Mariah Carey, Brian enlisted an army of producers more in tune with the current R&B scene, like the Trackmasters (Poke & Tone), Bad Boy Records' "The Hitmen", and most notably Sean "Puff Daddy" Combs, who along with the Hitmen co-wrote and produced the first single "You Should Be Mine (Don't Waste My Time)". Built on a sample of James Brown's funk classic "I Got Ants In My Pants", the song is a 180 degree turn from "One Last Cry", with Brian asserting his desire as well as his impatience. And the record also featured Puffy protege Mase, providing a rap cameo that was getting to be the norm in 1997, as well as an uncredited female backup vocal from future SOTD singer Kelly Price...

"You Should Be Mine" became Brian's second top-40 pop hit in October of 1997. The single also climbed to #4 on Billboard magazine's R&B chart. Internationally, the single became his first and biggest chart hit in the UK, reaching the top-40 at #36.
