Songoftheday 12/14/20 - You're like my homie my shorty you've shown me so many things, and you're so special to me...

"Butta Love" - Next
from the album Rated Next (1997)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #16 (three weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 19

Today's song of the day comes from the R&B vocal group Next, who came together in Minneapolis in the early 1990s. Lead singer R.L. Huggar and siblings Tweety and T-Low Brown signed to Arista Records through the Divine Mill imprint run by rap group Naughty By Nature's K-Gee (Keir Gist). The trio released their debut album Rated Next in 1997. The lead single was "Butta Love", written by Huggar with producers Lance Alexander, Darren Lighty, and Tony Tolbert. The downtempo booty-call track didn't mince words with what Huggar wants, even though he claims its "more than sexual", going as far as describing his love as wearing "platforms, feet pedicured with no corns". Wow.

"Butta Love" became Next's first top-40 pop hit in December of 1997. The song also climbed to #4 on Billboard magazine's R&B chart. The Rated Next album made the top 40 of the Billboard 200 sales chart at #37, going on to sell over two million copies, a big chunk due to the next single.
