Songoftheday 11/2/14 - I'd say love was a magical thing I'd say love would keep us from pain had I been there...

George Michael - "A Different Corner"
from the album Music From The Edge Of Heaven (Wham!) (1986)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #7 (three weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 10

Today's Song of the Day was the first American single with singular solo credit for British pop singer/songwriter George Michael of Wham!, who had announced that he and Andrew Ridgeley would be splitting up the duo in the spring of 1986. They had already put out a single, "I'm Your Man", which would eventually end up on their last album Music From The Edge Of Heaven. George then released "A Different Corner", a song that sounded light years ahead of his output with Wham. Led by a piano and a synth bass, the sparse single spotlighted George's powerful and emotional vocals about uncertainty in a relationship...

"A Different Corner" became George's sixth top-10 single with or without Wham! in May of 1986. The single also climbed to #6 on the Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") chart in Billboard magazine. Internationally the song was a huge success, topping the chart in England (for three weeks), Canada, and the Netherlands. The song remains one of my favorites of his.
