Brit Sweep: November 9, 2014...


The end of the weekend is here, and it's time to check out the songs making their debut on the official Top 100 singles chart in the UK this week...

The new #1 song in Britain is the fifth #1 solo hit for former Girls Aloud member Cheryl (formerly) Cole, who tops the list with "I Don't Care", the second single from her Only Human album. The first, "Crazy Stupid Love", also went to #1 back in July...

The fourth radio single from Scottish dance producer/musician Calvin Harris' Motion album, "Outside" featuring singer Ellie Goulding, became its fourth top-tenner at #6. The other three, "Under Control", "Summer", and "Blame", all reached the top of the UK chart...


It's only the beginning of November, but the new Christmas ad from British retail giant John Lewis has hit the telly, and this year it features singer/songwriter Tom Odell covering the John Lennon/Beatles song "Real Love". The song comes on the chart at #21; the version from the Beatles' Anthology went to #4 in the UK. Last year's ad featured Lily Allen covering Keane's "Somewhere Only We Know", and went to #1...


 Irish rock band the Script follow up their #3 hit "Superheroes" with "No Good In Goodbye", which enters at #26...


Nicki Minaj is back at #35 with "Only", featuring Drake, Lil' Wayne, and Chris Brown. Her last single, "Anaconda", went to #3 in the UK...


 Electronic artist Henry Krinkle lands at #41 with "Stay"...


One Direction move in at #44 with "Ready To Run". Their current radio single "Steal My Girl" went to #3 and now stands at #9...


The British Veterans Day (or "Poppy Day") charity single "No Man's Land (Green Field Of France)" from British soul/blues singer Joss Stone and guitarist Jeff Beck comes in at #49. The video was shot at the art installation at the Tower Of London. Stone reached the British top-10 ten years ago with "You Had Me"...


The third single from American singer Ariana Grande's My Everything album, "Love Me Harder", enters at #66. The first, "Problem", topped the chart here earlier this year...


Newcomer Josef Salvat makes his debut at #72 with a cover of Rihanna's "Diamonds"...


The fourth single from James Blunt's Moon Landing album, "When I Find Love Again", lands at #78. The set's lead-off single, "Bonfire Heart", went to #4 last year...


The final newbie of the week at #100 is Mary J. Blige with "Right Now". The track is from her upcoming The London Sessions album. She's racked up seven top-10 hits in England, with "One" with U2 going all the way to #2 in 2006...

I've resisted "I Don't Care," but damn it's catchy. I'll always take Ellie over Cheryl, but since Cheryl performed the single last Sunday on the X Factor, it wasn't hard to predict she would come out on top.

I hear ya John. I actually am not raving over the Calvin/Ellie track. Maybe his last few singles are a little too samey samey. As for Cheryl, it ain't Fight For Your Love, but it's better than her last one.
