Songoftheday 9/14/14 - Slippin' away silently we took the night, he pulled the shades locking out the neon lights...
Marilyn Martin - "Night Moves"
from the album Marilyn Martin (1986)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #28 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 6
Today's Song of the Day is from singer Marilyn Martin, who started out as a much-wanted backup vocalist for rock artists the likes of Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks. The latter even got her to record one of her songs, "the Sorcerer" for the soundtrack to the movie Streets Of Fire in 1984. But her big break came when she was tapped to record a duet with then white-hot Phil Collins for another movie, White Nights. That single, "Separate Lives", went to #1 in November of 1985, setting her up for the release of her self-titled debut solo album. The first single from the project, "Night Moves" was co-written by the singer with producer Jon Astley with another artist with experience at the top of the pop chart, John Parr (of "St. Elmo's Fire" fame). It does sound like a Nicks/Benatar album cut, which I'm sure helped it along...
"Night Moves" became Marilyn's second (and so far last) top-40 pop hit in March of 1986, while climbing to #18 on the Mainstream Rock radio chart in Billboard magazine. It would be her last time on the Hot 100, although she released a worthy follow-up album a couple of years later. Martin then dabbled in Christian music before settling down as a real estate agent.
Up tomorrow: the crazy work week begins.
