Rock Sweep: August 24, 2013...

Round two of today's "chart sweeps" is up, and now I'm serving up the latest rock songs reaching the radio charts in Billboard magazine.

On the aggregate Rock Airplay chart, Imagine Dragons hold steady at #1 for an amazing 24th week with "Radioactive"....

The top entry on the chart is by the Kentucky-based alternative rock group Cage The Elephant, who are at #38 with the first single from their upcoming third album, "Come A Little Closer".  On the main rock list they went to #1 in 2010 with "Shake Me Down", a track that even made my year-end top-10.

Swedish EDM master Avicii dances in at #40 with his crossover hit "Wake Me Up", featuring the vocals of blues-rock singer Aloe Blacc....

Another Swedish act, newcomers NONONO, also enter the chart at #43 with "Pumpin' Blood"...

Texan indie-rock band the Unlikely Candidates arrive at #47 with "Follow My Feet"...

The final entry on the big rock chart at #49 is the alt-rock group AFI (A Fire Inside) with "17 Crimes", the second single from their upcoming Burials album. The first, "I Hope You Suffer", topped out at #40...

...and now onward to the rock radio format sub-charts...

On the Mainstream Rock radio panel, Avenged Sevenfold climb to the top with "Hail To The King". It's their second #1 hit here since "So Far Away" in 2011...

Entering at #38 is veteran heavy metal band Black Sabbath with "End Of The Beginning". It's the follow-up to their top-10 reunion track "God Is Dead?"....

And right under that is a band about to celebrate 20 years on the charts, neo-metal stars Korn with "Never Never". They have reached the top-10 on this format an even dozen times, with "Twisted Transistor" going to #3 in 2005....

Meanwhile, on the Alternative/Modern Rock chart, Lorde from New Zealand becomes the first solo woman lead-artist #1 hit on this chart in 17 years with "Royals". The last was "Mother Mother" by Tracy Bonham, so it's not necessarily a mark of staying power...

The top debut of the week is by another Antipodean act, The Naked and Famous also from New Zealand with the first single from their upcoming sophomore set, "Hearts Like Ours", my "Rock Pick of the Week". In 2010 they went to #9 with "Young Blood"...

The aforementioned songs "Come A Little Closer" and "Pumpin' Blood" are the other entries at #35 and #39, respectively. Cage the Elephant has a big history here, topping the alt-rock chart three times, with "In One Ear", "Back Against The Wall", and "Shake Me Down"...

Over at the Triple-A (album adult alternative, or "hipster rock") format, Jack Johnson hangs two (weeks) at #1 with "I Got You"...

California singer/songwriter Brett Dennen comes in at #27 with "Wild Child"...

....and popping in at #30 is indie-folk band Dawes with "Most People". It's the follow-up to their AAA top-10 hit "From A Window Seat"...

At the harder-edged Active Rock radio panel,  Avenged Sevenfold's "Hail To The King" climbs to #1, while the aforementioned Korn and Black Sabbath track arrive at #37 and #38 respectively...

Lastly, on the older-skewing Heritage Rock format, the Stone Temple Pilots hold for a second week with "Out Of Time"...

Jumpin' in at #20 is horror-metal god Rob Zombie with "We're An American Band"...

and rounding it up at #24 is Alice In Chains with "Voices"....

That's a wrap for this high-quality sweep (I've been a big rock fan lately), but I'll return in an hour and a half with the latest on R&B radio. Rock On!
