Today's Song of the Day is by the Jersey-born pop/funk group Kool & The Gang, whose Deodato-produced 16th album, As One, scored the band two more top-40 pop hits with "Big Fun" and "Let's Go Dancin' (Ooh La La La)". The band returned to the studio the following year to co-producer their next set with engineer Jim Bonnefond, and the result was a more soft-pop effort whose lead-off single, "Joanna", seemed not just a love song but a missive to any woman named Joanna (perfect for Mother's Day of those born with that name...)...

"Joanna" became the band's lucky seventh #1 R&B hit at the start of 1984, as well as reaching the runner-up spot on both the American and British pop charts, and also the US adult-contemporary chart.

In 1989, Japanese pop duo Wink covered the song bilingually (click here to see the video)...

French dance act Love & Mind filtered out the record for their single "That Girl"...
