Songoftheday 1/4/14 - Can I ever live without you girl, get back on my feet again...

Giuffria - "Call To The Heart"
from the album Giuffria (1984)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #15 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 7

Today's Song of the Day is by the pop metal band Giuffria, who were named for its leader, keyboardist Gregg Giuffria from Mississippi's Gulf Coast, who formerly was a member of the rock group Angel. That band just missed the top-40 in 1978 with their cover of the Young Rascals hit "Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore" (#44). After an attempt by Gregg to record a new Angel album with new players, he christened Giuffria with new lead singer David Glen Eisley (son of Hawaiian Eye star Anthony Eisley), and released their self-title debut album in 1984. The first single, "Call To The Heart", was an awesome slice of hair-band goodness, with a Journey-like sound with tight harmonies and Eisley's soaring vocals. Eisley and Giuffria wrote the track that was produced by Gregg with British icon Andy Johns (Led Zep, Rolling Stones)...

You can't get any more 80s than this.

"Call To The Heart" went to the top-20 on the American pop chart in February of 1985, while reaching #3 on the rock radio chart in Billboard.  Their follow-up single, "Lonely In Love", went to #57, and a track from their next album, "I Must Be Dreaming", made #28 on the rock list and missed the pop top-40 at #52 in 1986.

One year later Giuffria disbanded his namesake band and formed the House Of Lords, which had a couple of minor pop hits with "I Wanna Be Loved" going to #58. These days Gregg co-owns the Hard Rock Casino in Biloxi Missouri and does gaming machines in Vegas.

For some reason I confuse this song with "When the Heart Rules the Mind". Honest mistake.

True, though GTR is more "lesser Asia" and Giuffria is more "lesser Journey"
