Songoftheday 1/21/14 - Ever since you've been leaving me I've been wanting to cry, now I know how it feels for you I've been wanting to die...

Julian Lennon - "Too Late For Goodbyes"
from the album Valotte (1984)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #5 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 12

Today's Song of the Day is by Julian Lennon, whose uncanny resemblance to father John in both appearance and voice certainly helped his exposure in addition to his talent, and his first single to hit the States, "Valotte", went top 10 at the beginning of 1985. For its follow-up Julian released the song that introduced him to his native English audiences, "Too Late For Goodbyes". The synth-driven tune chugs along quite nicely, and like with "Valotte", was filmed for the music video by the late Sam Peckinpah. Even though Julian plays the harmonica in the clip, it's actually on record by the great Toot Thielmann, who did the same for Billy Joel's "Leave a Tender Moment Alone"...

"Too Late For Goodbyes" became Julian's second American pop top-ten hit in March of 1985, and would also do the same in the UK, becoming the singer's biggest hit to date. The record also topped the adult-contemporary (or "easy-listening") radio format in the States, and stopped right under the rock top-10 at #11.

...and again really live in concert...

Another "legacy" act, Jakob Dylan's The Wallflowers, covered "Too Late For Goodbyes" in 2003...

Up tomorrow: A song that spawned a radio ban and thousands of T-shirt sales.
