Songoftheday 1/10/14 - You cant bystand all the people stand them on their own, they will fall to pieces so we watch them grow...

Culture Club - "Mistake No. 3"
from the album Waking Up With The House On Fire (1984)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #33 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 5

Today's Song of the Day is by the British pop group Culture Club, who misstepped a bit in 1984 with the horrid first single from their third album, "The War Song". They quickly released a more suitable follow-up, the ballad "Mistake No. 3", which was the band's most tender ballad put out as a single...

"Mistake No. 3" became Culture Club's ninth top-40 pop hit in America in February of 1985, while scaling to #18 on the Adult-Contemporary radio chart and even placed at #61 on the R&B format. I'm certain the record would've gotten a better reception with a stronger first single to follow-up. It's interesting to note the record did really well in Canada, reaching #10 ("The War Song" was also a top-ten hit there as well).

And here's a (admittedly crappy) clip of the band live with the song..

Up tomorrow: A sweet Scottish lass lets you into her vijayjay.

I've always loved this ballad. It deserved a much better placing in the US than it got, and you're right about "War Song" hurting their momentum.
