Pop Sweep: January 25, 2014...


Hey gang, it's time to kick off the first of today's "chart sweeps" checking out the songs reaching the various singles charts in Billboard magazine, and as usual I'll start off with the "big chart" and the pop radio lists...

On the "big" one, Billboard's Hot 100, which tallies radio airplay, sales, and internet streaming, Pitbull & Ke$ha rack up a second week at #1 with "Timber"....

The top debut belongs to actress and singer Lucy Hale, who stars in the show Pretty Little Liars, with the country-tinged "You Sound Good To Me". As a young girl, Lucy appeared on the Idol spinoff American Juniors, finishing in the top-5...

Another track from Beyonce's self-titled album arrives on its own on the chart as "Partition" comes in at #90. The main promoted single, "Drunk In Love", has been lingering in the teens for all of its four weeks...


Country hunk Randy Houser returns at #93 with the third single from his How Country Feels album, "Goodnight Kiss". It follows "Runnin' Outta Moonlight", which made it to #24 last year (his first Hot 100 top-40)...


Thomas Rhett also follows up a big hit at #94 with "Get Me Some Of That". He just went to #25 with "It Goes Like This"..


Eric Church makes it a "hat trick" of country hunks as "Give Me Back My Hometown" arrives at #95. It's the second single from his upcoming fourth album The Outsiders. The title track made it to #51...


Hip-Hop artist J. Cole comes in at #96 with "She Knows" featuring indie rock acts Amber Coffman and The Cults. It's the fourth single from his Born Sinner album; "Power Trip" went to #19 last year...


The first single from rapper Flo Rida's upcoming The Perfect 10 set to make the Hot 100, "How I Feel", enters at #98. It samples the Nina Simone classic "Feeling Good" (as remixed by Bassnectar). He's accumulated three #1 hits on the chart...


Newcomer SoMo (Joseph Sommers-Morales) has the last debut at #100 with his first hit "Ride". The Texan has built up a big YouTube fanbase...


Now onward to the pop radio charts...

On the Mainstream Top-40 radio panel, OneRepublic climb to the top with "Counting Stars"...

Jason Derulo comes in at #35 with "Talk Dirty" featuring rapper 2 Chainz. The song has already topped the chart in Germany, Australia, and England....


Dutch DJ and producer Martin Garrix crosses over at #39 with his club hit "Animals". Already a #1 single in England, this record also topped the club chart in America...


Pop duo MKTO place at #40 with "Classic", my "Pop Pick of the Week", which has already been a top-10 single in Australia. The pair of Malcolm Kenney and Tony Oller appeared on the Nickelodeon TV show Gigantic...


Meanwhile, on the older-skewing Adult Top-40 format, "Counting Stars" remains on top for a fifth week...

The top entry at #37 is Katy Perry with the third single from her Prism album, "Dark Horse" featuring rapper Juicy J. All three are still on the chart, with former #1 "Roar" at #10 and "Unconditionally" at #8..


Dropping in at #40 is Swedish folk-dance merger-man Avicii with "Hey Brother"....


Lastly, on the Adult Contemporary (or Easy Listening) radio chart, the aforementioned "Roar" enjoys an eighth non-consecutive week at #1...

One Direction make the "adult" chart as "Story Of My Life" pops in at #26. It's only their second single to reach this format - their debut "What Makes You Beautiful" went to #8...


The other entry at #29 is "Love Don't Die" from the Fray. The band topped this format with "How To Save A Life"...
