Robbed Hit of the Week 1/14/13 - George Benson's "Inside Love (So Personal)"...

George Benson - "Inside Love (So Personal)"
from the album In Your Eyes (1983)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #43

This week's "robbed hit" is by jazz-soul legend George Benson, who returned after a three-year break between studio albums (and a top-5 pop single with "Turn Your Love Around") with his 19th studio set, In Your Eyes, in 1983. The Arif Mardin-produced album's first single was the silky-smooth post-disco groove of "Inside Love (So Personal)", which fellow neo-soul producer Kashif co-produced....

While the single did very well on R&B radio, spending six weeks at #3 on the Soul Singles chart, it couldn't compete as well with the new wave music dominating pop radio at the time, and stalled right under the top-40. I'm sure if this came out a year earlier, it would've been huge. He would finally break the top-30 on the next single, "Lady Love Me (One More Time)", though, his last foray into those heights of the pop chart (and an upcoming "Song of the Day").

Besides the song's success on the R&B chart, it also made the top-40 on the adult contemporary (soft-rock) chart, and did very well in the clubs, reaching #7 on the dance chart...here's a DJ-made extended mix that's pretty good...

That's it for today....tomorrow I'll have another Song of the Day, candletime, and this week's recap of the French and German music charts. Good night!
