Aussie Sweep: January 23, 2013...

Hey gang, it's time now to check out the songs making it on to the official Australian music charts this week. In a rare event, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "Thrift Shop" get deposed from the #1 spot by.....themselves, with their pro-marriage equality song "Same Love". This gives me unending joy, especially since it proves that the tide of intolerance in that country is at death's door...

The top debut this week is by British boyband One Direction with their single "Kiss You" at #15, complete with totally homoerotic video that takes the five guys through a myriad of 60's movie mockups. So far they have had four top-10 singles, with "Live While We're Young" going to #2.  Grade: B

American trash-pop queen Ke$ha arrives at #32 with "C'mon", the second single from her Warrior album. It's the first of her lead-artist singles to miss the top-10 in this country, where she went to #1 with "Tik Tok" and "We R Who We R". It still boggles my mind that it took six people to write this. Grade: C-

The first British X Factor winner to make the Australian chart with a "winner's single", James Arthur comes in at #50 with his remake of Shontelle's "Impossible" (which never did even hit this country). Grade: C+

David Bowie's return to recording, "Where Are We Now?" enters at #78 this week. Grade: A-

French DJ/producer David Guetta and Swedish dance duo Taped Rai arrive at #82 with "Just One Last Time". It's the ninth single from the Nothing But The Beat collection to make the chart here. Grade: B-

British dubstep producer Jon Gooch, who records under the moniker of Feed Me, debuts at #83 with "Love Is All I Got" with "folktronica" act Crystal Fighters. The song is already a top-20 hit in Belgium...Grade: B-

Californian electro-pop artist Robert Delong comes in at #90 with "Global Concepts"...(NSFW for the F word) Grade: C+

The final debut of the week at #91 is American rapper Kendrick Lamar with "Swimming Pools (Drank)". Grade: B

That's a wrap for tonight...I'll return tomorrow with another Song of the Day, Candletime, 7 of the 70s, and 8 of the 80s. G'day!
